@PurpleJillybeans Is it multiuser?

If so, probably a minicomputer? Thinking of things like the Microvax I and II and also of the MP/M machines out there.

If _not_, probably a workstation. I think I'd bring that back into rotation.

Ach, die laufen zum teil noch auf MicroVAX, die wissen nicht mal was Netzwerk ist.

"The MicroVAX II, code-named Mayflower, is a mid-range MicroVAX introduced in May 1985"

This was my high school after-school job computer in year 1986 at age 16 when I worked for Telos Federal Systems as an #Apprentice in computer science and military computer warfare. #PentagonContractor

I’m showing my age, but I remember using Wyse WY-60 terminals connected to a MicroVAX II in the computing lab at university………

Myst, the last game I ever played. Second Life doesn't count... First game was: share.google/aimode/HpNOL... then Lunar Lander (LEM) on a microVax/VT100 monochrome terminal. Yeah I'ma old geek.

"Are you finished building your MicroVAX?"
"He's building a MicroElectrolux now."
"Are you sure it's not a MicroHenry?"

Jee I don't know, how did we make the microvax when the 11/780 existed

This argument would only hold if DEC wasn't also making more performant machines at the same time as they made the microvax

my point is these are the same ladder. efficiency and performance dialectically improve each other. how do you force a firm to only pick the first?

🖥️ Tech Spec Tuesday: Meet the MicroVAX 2000! DEC packed VAX computing into a compact 1987 workstation with up to 14 MB of RAM, MFM storage, Ethernet, and support for both VMS and ULTRIX. Small by VAX standards, but still serious computing. #VintageComputer

Il Commodore 64 era il mio sogno, io che in azienda avevamo un Microvax, in Uni avevamo avuto un PDP/11 e nel ‘86 mi ero comprato un Mac SE, ma niente, quando hai un mito non te lo sgretola nessuno.

Slightly related flashback: The scene in "23" where the protagonists want to buy an old, used MicroVAX (large tower size), but instead get handed a full-size VAX (multi-cabinet size).

I grew up with mainframes (IBM 360/370) and "mini-computers" (Vax...11/35 11/70, microvax).
Later came Unix based systems.
Tried desperately to install RedHat et al...then Linux, at home.
The key ended up being that I had to let go of Windoze. Finally about […]

CCC was there: the Concourse Computing Center. Concourse was a self-selected program for first-year students, and CCC was initially a hand-me-down PDP 11 and then also a MicroVax. CCC was where I had my first Usenet connection, where I met all the soc.motss people (early online homos) some here 👋

(The VAX — technically a microvax — I sold on in 2000 when I realized what an expensive nightmare the storage media would be. I do enjoy videos of people doing this successfully today)

Trovi anche microVax, più o meno allo stesso prezzo.
Ma poi cosa ci fai, metti su un museo?

Coming from the DEC world, I thought floppy drives were simple things. I'd used Cumana drives in college in 1983 but then dropped straight into PDP/MicroPDP/VAX/MicroVAX where all the floppy drives were the same.

Boy did I get a shock once I started collecting in the late 90s 😆

Had this earworm all afternoon after digging out a box of old DEC PDP/MicroVAX boards.

Reminds me of how I used to have my Amiga 1000 serial connected as a VT terminal to my MicroVax II. Totally worked like a champ!

I have been known to use a MicroVAX II as a space heater. 700 watts is 700 watts.
