AYANEO has been selling handheld gaming PCs since 2020, making the company one of the pioneers of this space, along with GPD (who's been at it since 2016) and One Netbook (2021). But the space has become increasingly crowded in recent years, so while AYANEO doesn't plan to give up on handhelds anytime soon, it's interesting to see that the company is looking to branch out into new territory.

Most laptop computers released in the past few decades have a familiar design. Six years after releasing the original GPD MicroPC as a palm-sized computer aimed at IT professionals, GPD is bringing back the form factor with a new model sporting a bigger screen, faster processor, and more storage. While the company hasn't announced pricing or availability details yet, here's what we know so far about the upcoming GPD MicroPC 2. Netbooks may have gone out of fashion years ago, but a handful of Chinese PC makers continue to crank out cheap, tiny laptops with hardware that's just good enough for basic tasks... sometimes by stuffing newer components into older models. Case in point? The X-Plus Piccolo Series71 is a mini-laptop with a 7 inch display, an Intel N100 Alder Lake-N processor and 16GB of RAM.

The GPD Win Max 3 is a mini-laptop that packs a lot of horsepower into a compact design. With a 9.06 inch display and a nearly full-sized keyboard and Precision touchpad, it's a little laptop you can use for productivity on the go. But remove a couple of magnetic panels above the keyboard and you'll find a set of joysticks for gaming. And with an AMD Strix Halo processor featuring discrete-class Radeon 8060S integrated graphics, this is a little laptop that should offer decent AAA gaming performance. But in order to cram a processor that powerful into this mini-laptop, GPD took an approach that it's also used on some handhelds with the same chip: instead of a built-in battery, the GPD Win Max 3 uses an external battery pack.

The Rabbit R1 launched in 2024 as a handheld AI device with an unusual design featuring a bright orange case and a scroll wheel for navigation. It was widely panned by reviewers for failing to live up to its limited promise. But the company behind the device has continued to plug away at the software in an effort to make the weird little device more useful.

A handful of Chinese PC makers have been selling mini-laptops with 8 inch displays and Intel Alder Lake-N processors for a few years. Now we're starting to see new models with Intel Twin Lake chips.
