american pop culture is built on minstrelry but because we don't acknowledge this it comes out as surprising relations to specific things
Since 'Mickey Mouse is blackface?!' is back in the discourse, re-upping this - the uncomfortable thing is not that all these cartoons were intended to be direct minstrel-show analogues (especially because we have examples, like Bosko, that very much were), but that the iconography was universalized
The honest answer is that racist/ethnic caricature was so foundational to American cartooning that the visual tropes filtered down into largely unrelated areas

The second is that minstrelry never ended; we dropped the makeup, but kept everything else. Every white pop star whose singing, dancing, clothes and body mannerisms are imitations of black people (so, every white pop star) is just Al Jolson with better fashion sense.

Media does not need to be serious to be worthy of serious criticism, nor to do serious damage in its portrayal of a people. Minstrelry was about as unserious as media of its time could be and it was pivotal to Jim Crow campaigns, and has left lasting damage for generations since.
