The #KansasNebraskaAct was signed by Pres. Pierce on #ThisDayInHistory in 1854. It repealed the #MissouriCompromise and replaced it with #PopularSovereignty. This set off a rush to settle the new states by pro- and anti-#slavery forces, leading to the #BleedingKansas 'civil war'.

The #MissouriCompromise was signed into law on #ThisDayInHistory in 1820 by Pres. #JamesMonroe. It aimed to uphold a delicate balance between slave & free states by admitting #Missouri with slavery, #Maine without it, & banning slavery in the rest of the #LouisianaPurchase lands.
