The historical figure of John Brown, the fiery abolitionist who fought in Bleeding Kansas before the Civil War, has become iconic. Here is a Kansas University Jayhawk in the form of this firebrand! #JohnBrown #Jayhawk #BleedingKansas #Photography

Love to see my research subject, #BleedingKansas, is trending!

My other favorite part of that viral promo (besides John Brown) is the tiny blip of this picture…

#BleedingKansas bleeds no more, except in the hearts of the #Algerian football club
Awww I just noticed the Algerian fans behind the goal have a big THANK YOU LAWRENCE banner because the people of Lawrence Kansas decided to ride so hard for them

On this day in 1856, abolitionist John Brown was executed. Here in “Bleeding Kansas” he remains a hero for fighting to end slavery and for avenging the 800+ pro-slavery men who attacked our town only months earlier.

“I have only a short time to live, only one death to die, and I will die fighting for this cause. There will be no peace in this land until slavery is done for.“– John Brown, Kansas Territory, 1856.

So, what does the name “Freelance Kansas” mean? A.) maybe it’s obvious — I’m a #freelancer and I live and (mostly) work in #Kansas. But B.), there IS an underlying purpose, and it has to do with my new home state’s history — #FreeKansas, #BleedingKansas… I’d love to tell you more:

#KansasCity #KC
What the heck does “Freelance Kansas” mean?
To be clear: Freelance Kansas is a boutique marketing firm, and the name plays on Free Kansas and the Bleeding Kansas period of history.

A #FugitiveSlaveAct passed Congress in 1850 on #ThisDayInHistory as part of the #CompromiseOf1850. It required officials and citizens of anti-slavery states return escapees, and was following by a new #liberal party (the #RepublicanParty) and to #BleedingKansas and the #CivilWar.

John Brown wasn’t “crazy”—he answered proslavery terrorism with the only language America understood: force. While slaveholders burned towns, he was called mad for killing five. #BleedingKansas #AbolitionistClarity

🤔 GOP has learned the lesson well, right from the top! Does GOP Republican MAGA Trump EVER answer a question without first saying "I don't know about that"? Roger Marshall is a chip off the old block of shit 💩 & has been useless for Kansas! #BleedingKansas #ImpeachTrump #RepublicansAreTheProblem 🤬
Sen. Roger Marshall, on MS NOW, says he doesn't know the "details" and can't comment on Trump's pardon of a former Honduran leader who was convicted of major drug trafficking. That's the go-to move by GOP lawmakers these days: ignorance of things that they're being paid to know about.

#OnThisDay 1856:
A pro-slavery mob attacked and ransacked #Lawrence, Kansas. The incident fueled the irregular conflict in Kansas Territory that later became known as #BleedingKansas.
Several flags were flown by the mob including flags declaring "Southern Rights" and "Supremacy of the White Race"

The #KansasNebraskaAct was signed by Pres. Pierce on #ThisDayInHistory in 1854. It repealed the #MissouriCompromise and replaced it with #PopularSovereignty. This set off a rush to settle the new states by pro- and anti-#slavery forces, leading to the #BleedingKansas 'civil war'.

An event from the #BleedingKansas period of unrest between pro- and anti- #slavery forces, in 1856 on #ThisDayInHistory Lawrence was sacked & burnt by pro-slavery forces. Only one person was killed (a pro-slavery thug) but the presses of two #FreeState newspapers were destroyed.
