Steve and Rohan dissect the humor and horror of the political landscape. They assess the Biden administration and look at figures like Elon Musk and Ramaswamy as part of a new wave of governance setting out to undermine the fabric of federal institutions.

We made money. We can remake it.

Money isn’t “real”, it’s just a societal agreement.

So why not amend the agreement so everyone has enough for their basic needs?

Universal Basic Income is a software update to an old operating system. #UBI

This letter in the New Statesman a couple of years ago seems even truer now.

Not to nitpick the amazing stand that Cory Booker is making today, but I really wish he wouldn't be using it to talk about the national "debt" and deficits bogeyman. Republicans are right to not care when in power. Democrats should not cry hypocrisy but instead do good things with deficit spending.

We really need you making noise about universal basic income. The focus needs to be on basic needs. Every American needs basic income, healthcare, and lifelong educational access. The working class needs a foundation of economic security. Universality plus taxes is the way to best build the floor.
Negative Income Tax is Not Cheaper Than Universal Basic Income, Nor is Guaranteed Income 'More Progressive' by Excluding the Rich
Many people don't know this, but Milton Friedman was once asked in the Spring of 2000 what he thought about a universal basic income (UBI) in comparison to his proposed negative income tax (NIT) and t...

Some thoughts about what Senator Booker is saying now:

Increasing the "national debt" to futher enrich an obscenely rich elite is destructive to the economy.

Increasing the public "debt" to spend for the Public Purpose is GOOD.

It all depends on how it's spent.

Like we don't already enforce capitalism-driven indentured servitude by forcing people to sell their labor to others, sometimes *multiple* others, just to survive.

UBI is *FREEDOM*.
''UBI will create dependency and enslavement.''

No — bullshit jobs already trap millions in meaningless routines just to survive.

UBI is the opposite; it creates a stable financial foundation, restoring freedom, dignity and opportunities for everyone, not just the lucky few.

The moderation and block tools on here are so advanced , if you see someone you don’t want to see on here, just block them. Don’t attack them.

There used to be great give and take discussions on politics and news. Not so much any more.

Doesn’t have to be this way

Starmer and Reeves are obsessed with the idea of growth. Growing the economy comes by providing ordinary people with the means to spend. The poor, the old and the sick are being crushed. This is not Labour as I once knew it.

Kudos to @stephaniekelton.bsky.social for wading through punchlines to explain #ModernMonetaryTheory. It’s never been a “theory;” it’s how money is created to fund govt sanctioned programs. We always have money to solve big problems, given political will and resources.
December 6, 2024 at 5:51 PM
We don't talk enough about how the underfunding and stigmatization of anti-poverty programs has undermined trust in government--and trust in the Democratic politicians who champion those programs--among the very people those programs are designed to support. (🧵 1/)

I hope (LOL) that this puts an end to 'oh no crisis, must cut spending!' default that's been the approach for years. No better example of gov't spending to pull out of a slump than post-Great Depression and post-Covid spending. Austerity measures are so often the wrong approach. Compare to EU!
