Le Corbusier (1887-1965) :
Head of a Woman (Tête de Femme) c.1953-62

carved and polychromed wood sculpture

The result of a unique collaboration between architect Le Corbusier and the Breton master cabinetmaker, carpenter Joseph Savina.
Tête de Femme (c. 1953–62) is a unique carved and polychromed wood sculpture created through the renowned artistic collaboration between architect Le Corbusier and master cabinetmaker Joseph Savina. It represents an intersection of Le Corbusier's modular, cubist-inspired biomorphic forms and Savina's precise woodworking craft. Collaboration and Creation The Partnership: Beginning in 1945, Le Corbusier provided sketches, paintings, and conceptual designs, which Joseph Savina translated into three-dimensional wooden volumes. Polychromy: Le Corbusier personally applied the paint and color schemes (polychromy) to the finished wooden surfaces.Signatures: These joint pieces typically bear the joint initials "JS" and "LC".Artistic SignificanceForm: The sculpture abstracts the female head into interlocking geometric planes and organic contours.Market Value: Works from the Le Corbusier-Savina collaboration are rare and highly sought after by collectors, commanding hundreds of thousands of dollars at major auction houses like Drouot.
