After decades of talks, Greece has agreed to transfer the remains of Tsar Samuil to Bulgaria. In return, Bulgaria will hand over church treasures taken from the monasteries of Panagia Eikosifoinissa and Saint John the Baptist in Serres during WWI.

And what we must do now is ensure that these skills are not lost. Backup hard copies, safely stored. Teach her to read, use an index, navigate with a map. Learn old, off-grid skills ourselves so that we can pass them on. Like the monasteries in the Dark Ages. Winter is coming.

And the lavabo also had a religious use. In medieval Christian churches and monasteries, there was a lavatory area before entering the church, where Christians would wash their hands, face and feet before entering the worship space. It could even be a whole fancy fountain, called a Cantharus.

From its humble start by 13 monks seeking solitude in 1132, Fountains Abbey grew into one of Britain’s wealthiest Cistercian monasteries before its fall in 1539. Walking these huge, surviving stone arches, you feel the weight of nearly 900 years of piety, power, and dissolution.

🚩”The reality on the ground exposes the contradiction between these claims and what Christians actually experience,” Khouri said. “Attacks against churches, monasteries, holy sites, clergy, and Christian citizens continue, alongside the confiscation of land and property, the imposition of taxes…”🚩

This Drink Was Banned for 13 Centuries in Europe — But It Saved Thousands of Lives
In the darkness of the Middle Ages, a high-alcohol clear liquid was secretly made in remote monasteries — not to get drunk, but as a cure for plagues. It was not just a drink: it was the first recorded distillation in human history, and its secret technique was kept for centuries. Why did the Church

"Most monasteries...are not somber places....Even during sermons...people can be seen chatting in the corner...talking on cell phones, eating, and flirting. Children are rarely corralled, and commerce abounds....These are not places of forced spirituality, ethical directives, or detached repose."

Also, landlords. But, yeah. Dissolving the monasteries created a LOT of extra, secondary.... fathers. 💀
Fathers of Education, of Law, of History (and history was delivered via... performance...), etcetera, etcetera, etcetera, lmao. No, not literal titles, but yes, literal DUTIES.

RKS EURO FILM: “Saints”: Sacrilegious Pilfering’s and a Heist
What a fascinating plot line in this film set in Barcelona and recently screened at the St. Sebastian Film Festival. Rosario (Eulàlia Ramón), a former missionary nun, leads a gang of do gooder thieves stealing religious statues of saints from churches, convents and monasteries. Barcelona itself is protected by two patron saints. And Director Mikel Gurrea lives in the Sants neighbourhood of Barcelona.

England relied on charity during the early Middle Ages, generally handled by and distributed through the monasteries. Then Henry VIII became King, closed them all, stole their property and money, and proclaimed himself God. We had no effective welfare system from about 1520 until 1948.

It is an unequivocal fact that the average Tibetan Chinese national is infinitely more free as a democracy-practising citizen of the People's Republic than they ever were as a Serf in the Theoretic Feudal state under the rule of the monasteries.

And I thought that the medieval incels in monasteries were annoying and dangerous enough (they came up with the Malleus Maleficarum which kicked off witch-hunting in Europe) but these are certainly their spiritual descendants if not physical descendants

Melmoth the Wanderer by Charles R. Maturin | Gothic Horror, Damnation, Temptation & Supernatural Mystery Part 1
⭐ Catholic Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ 4/5 — Catholic Review A profoundly dark Gothic novel built around temptation, sin, despair, salvation, damnation, and the value of the human soul. Maturin, an Irish Protestant clergyman, uses the supernatural story to explore the terrifying consequences of abandoning hope of salvation. Catholic listeners should use considerable discernment, because the novel contains strong anti-Catholic portrayals of monasteries, the Inquisition, and Catholic religious life that reflect Maturin's Protestant perspective rather than Catholic teaching. Scholars have also noted that the novel's treatment of Catholicism is more complicated than simple caricature, with some Catholic characters depicted through acts of charity and benevolence.

We moved on to Leonidio as next stop. This is roughly a 2hr drive from Nafplio and the coastal drive is stunning.

Leonidio a great little coastal/farming stop that is well worth a stay. Stunning valley (big climbing centre) and handy for secluded coves & mountain monasteries/villages Rural idyll.
