I’m trying out one of my new French spindles today, with some hand combed Castlemilk Moorit fleece. The spiral groove on the spindle holds the thread without the need for a half hitch to prevent the spindle from falling.

A few examples of textured knits. The cardigan was self designed using Barbara Walker’s books for inspiration.

Chonka, a beautiful moorit Icelandic yearling, gave me a fight but at least she walks amongst the shorn.

Shortly trundling off to the health centre in Castlemilk (SE Glasgow) for shingles jag (vaccination). I just discovered that there is such a thing as a Castlemilk Moorit sheep.
I DO NOT CARE that it is named after a totally different Castlemilk.

I could be making history here. Is this the first time Castlemilk Moorit fleece has been spun from an Eastern European style distaff with a French spindle?

Just a little sample of my Shetland Moorit raw fleece air dried over a mini bank holiday heatwave ☀️

Two long work days have dropped me back again, and so this is only Stage 18 on my #TourDeFleece. But it's #Manx #wool, one of my favourite spins, and a rare British breed.

Always some shade of moorit colour it's soft, and easy to spin.

Sun is lost in clouds now, but it was spectacular this morning.

Caught my girl mid-chew, I think she's only carrying a singleton though, she's been having an easy time, and hopping about with the icy weather #lambwatch #shetlandsheep #moorit #yarnseeds

this summer I have embarked on a wild journey…!

I sourced Shetland Moorit lambs fleece from a farm in Orkney 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 & am teaching myself the process of prepping wool !

skirted &scoured nearly 1kg of natural fleece ready to comb & handspin!

Love the natural colour!🤎

#ShowMeYourKnits 🧶 Blanket edition. I loved designing & making this textured blanket/hap. It has a little colour, but mostly the scrunchy texture and lovely lacy goose wing edging are what I most remember about knitting it. Knit in gorgeous Daughter of a Shepherd yarns, large or small, 2 poss. edges

Sweet Chonka, an Icelandic ewe lamb, is glowing in the morning light. She has such a pretty moorit fleece. Looking forward to shearing her this Spring.

Fat Lola, an Icelandic ewe, let her hostages out this morning: one moorit (bronze) girl and one white boy. Amos and Sasha, Great Pyrenees livestock guard dogs, were stellar and stayed with her the whole time since she lambed at the remote grazing site.

The brown colour of the hood is from the wool itself, rather than a dye, suggesting the wool came from Moorit sheep, probably an ancestor of the Castlemilk Moorit breed. But the feel of the wool was much closer to that of Shetland sheep, and it’s not uncommon for Shetland sheep to be coloured.
