motordom really is climate arson

Patricia Doersch spoke on behalf of the National Automobile Dealers Association. She thanked Zeldin for “proposing essential relief from current federal greenhouse gas rules.” Unrealistic vehicle emissions standards will drive up vehicle costs and contribute to slowing vehicle sales, she said.

Good lord. Incredibly sad. No place is safe from dangerous motordom.

car dependency and motordom literally makes us sick
"The chemical, called 6PPD-Q, is formed when fine tire particles meet ozone. That happens anytime new chunks of tire are exposed to the air, meaning the particle may be nearly ubiquitous in car-heavy environments."

Here come the tears of Motordom.

North America's car addiction produces monstrosities like this, applauded as visionary but really just out-of-control motordom. These projects sterilize landscapes, create mobility barriers, and drain public funds at breakneck speed.

Not to mention that *every* attempt to provide alternative infrastructure (bike lanes, bus lanes, subways, light rail, high speed rail, you name it) will be fought to the death by motordom.

These are the scenes that get Motordom riled up because this is clearly part of @thewaroncars.bsky.social 👇

horns and cars are loud. even motorists want nothing to do with motordom
It’s crazy to me that wearing noise cancelling earbuds while driving is a common practice now

Popular demands such as this one – to “gear them down” (mechanically limit vehicles’ maximum speed) – alarmed insiders in motordom. In response, they organized to shift blame from fast driving to careless walking.

the opportunity cost (economic, environmental, public health, quality of life) of motordom is immense.
How much better transit could we get for one overpass? How many kilometers of AAA infrastructure. How many missing sidewalks could we fill in? Such a waste of money to encourage driving.

April fools, fuck dem cars 🤘

If I'm out here sympathizing with motordom you know I'm in a hostage situation and to call the proper authorities.

In #Ireland we don’t even approach this. #motordom ensured students are CARted to local schools due to failure by politicians to provide safe routes to schools.
“Currently about 2/3rds of all Dutch children walk or bike to school, with 75% of secondary school kids cycling to school. By enabling safe and active travel, #Dutch cities prevent an estimated one million car journeys to school each morning.” — @modacitylife.bsky.social in book #CurbingTraffic

Motonormativity: They tell us to wear hi-viz. They tell us to have lights.

They tell us to be seen. They discipline our children. They tell us 'road safety is a shared responsibility'. Meanwhile, in #motordom:

Motordom established the institutions that codified US traffic engineering standards. When demands for speed governors proliferated 100 years ago, motordom organized to redefine safety so as to blame not speed but recklessness, and to include pedestrians among the reckless.

The legacies persist.

A vast sea of parking for oversized motordom, and a literal trash can for anyone on a bike.

This is not ok.

Pedestrians - Watch out!

Even the Netherlands used to shame pedestrians to promote motordom. They at least realized this as an absurdity of the past and put such propaganda in the Rijksmuseum as a distant memory.

In the 1920s, motordom aggressively pursued what it called “a radical revision of our conception of what a city street is for.” Pedestrians such as Nellie Bane and Marie Fowler resisted the “radical revision.”

That’s why, in 1922, motordom committed itself to “a radical revision of our conception of what a city street is for.”

As transport historian @norton.bsky.social frequently observes that almost *exactly* describes the early years of motor cars in the US. The first cars were hated by most people. Motordom fought back hard, soon defeating society's initial wishes.
It’s hard to imagine any technology that has ever fucked it this badly, and purely through arrogance, it’s like if the people who invented the car decided to showcase its utility by driving over your family dog and then backing up and doing it again, and also the car sucked and was bad

Motordom waged their campaign on three fronts: law, engineering standards and social norms. Vocabulary, including “jaywalker,” was essential to this effort.

This is comedy gold, but also “laugh or cry!”

Was explaining to European climate journalist that we can’t even talk about protected bike infrastructure in most blue cities in this country. Motordom and the needs of cars are prioritized over EVERYTHING else in this country.

Well done Ricky. Such a shame you have to protest inaction and lack of enforcement of everyday illegal activities because of #motonormativity, #motordom & #windscreenblindness

This may be the worst bicycle intersection design ever proposed in the history of motordom.
This is insane. Drivers don’t want this. Cyclists don’t want this. Don’t waste the paint or the effort.
