I just get so mad at how they kept undermining themselves when it came to presenting a world with people who had real feelings and investments in it. They try and wring pathos out of a pair of guardians and it's undercut by the next entry in the armor pieces being about how guardians are murderhobos

Most of them don't have unarmored AC high enough to help against all these darn min-maxed murderhobos that get churned out these days, so it's a sub-optimal decision not to use a chain-mail bikini with fish-hook nipple spikes and going for a grapple build.

Okay but like, the fact that society is intrinsically villainous-run by villains for villains, by means of villainy--and thus your band of murderhobos are by default morally in the right to rip and tear is kind of the core power fantasy of the setting.

The solution to a party of murderhobos is to give them an enemy unworthy of remorse. Don't try to force empathy because that's not the story they want.

The way I see this going is they're gonna either actually have the old themes of Dark Sun intact and the usual "They never even touched a PHB" crowd will be very loud about it, or softball the themes and focus on the gore and battle, in which case... I guess all the murderhobos will be happy?
