The Far Right riot in Belfast last night was nothing less than “a race-based pogrom”, Belfast MP and leader of the SDLP Claire Hanna said.

The mob hunted down non-whites and set fire to their homes.

Carl Whyte, a local councillor, called it “a hard Far Right element”.

How 'the rage machine' on social media inflamed violence in Marianna Spring Social media investigations correspondent I've been investigating for the BBC's Top Comment podcast how what happened in Belfast is a part of a pattern of a violence inflamed by social media algorithms. A post - like the video of the suspect in Belfast seriously injuring a man - sparks understandable shock. It goes viral. The suspect is identified (correctly or incorrectly) - in this case a Sudanese man who entered the UK in 2023. Then, anti-immigrant ideas are pushed on X by political profiles who have purchased blue ticks. Elon Musk weighs in on his profile with huge reach. All these posts are recommended by algorithms - which run on emotions like rage. Hate online, and then offline, is directed at immigrants, many of whom have nothing to do with the incident. This happened during the riots after the murder of three girls in Southport. It happened after allegations of a gang rape in Epsom, which turned out not to have happened. And it occurred following the murder of teenager Henry Nowak. There are differences - from outright misidentification of suspects to real allegations of police misconduct. But the cycle online is similar - and is partly due to the design of the sites and decisions to reward outrage, according to insiders.

I would like to take this opportunity to share the sentiment and the mood within the ethnic minority community in Belfast. This incident has sent shockwaves through the community. The extent of fear that I am sensing within the community is unprecedented. There are calls to burn down the houses down of immigrants. This is just a different level of fear and the majority of condemnation from the political leadership coming across, while very justifiably condemning the attack in the strongest possible terms (which they should), in a varying degree reinforcing the same toxic narrative on immigration.

Just two weeks ago, I called on a neighbour whose house had ‘locals only’ spray-painted on the wall. I wanted to see how he was and ask if there was anything I could do to help. This kind, warm man immediately brought me inside and showed me a letter he’d received from someone in the area. It was typed, printed out, with the contact details of local councillors and police and ended: “We have paint, and we can come over and paint out the graffiti. I am so ashamed that this happened to you.” Despite how it might look in the news and on social media, the violence on our streets and neighbourhoods right now is being orchestrated by only a handful of people, many of whom don’t live here and have spent years normalising division and whipping up hatred for their own ends. Their message was amplified in particular by Grok (X’s AI tool) and on Facebook and Instagram, as US billionaire social media bosses Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg allowed their platforms to be used as giant megaphones to spread hate and disinformation and tear apart our communities. It doesn't have to be like this. Writing this as my city goes into shutdown for a second night of violence, my phone is constantly pinging with WhatsApp updates. A group of literally hundreds of people has sprung into action, coordinating, donating, providing lifts for families to get somewhere safe for the night, bringing food to those who don’t want to leave the house, offering shelter, car seats, toys and arts supplies for children. Ordinary people from every background, community and colour are carrying out thousands of acts of care and repair, looking after people they do not know, and showing clearly that none of this is in their name.
