Around 1,600 years ago, a 50-year-old man died in what is now northwestern Germany. Researchers discovered DNA from Mycobacterium leprae, the bacterium responsible for leprosy, a strain never previously identified in Central or Northern Europe, in one of his teeth and a foot bone.
'Very rare' strain of leprosy found in man's 1,600-year-old burial in Germany
A high-status burial surprised archaeologists when they discovered leprosy in a man's bones from the fifth century.

A man buried in an oak boat at Fallward, northern Germany, in the second quarter of the 5th century CE carried Mycobacterium leprae in his heel and a molar. His skeleton shows no leprosy lesions at all.

Differential formation of nitrate-responsive mycobacterial intracytoplasmic membranes during Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection
Differential formation of nitrate-responsive mycobacterial intracytoplasmic membranes during Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection
Intracytoplasmic membranes (ICMs) form in environmental bacteria. Keck et al. describe Mycobacterial Intracytoplasmic Membranes (MIMs) in Mycobacterium tuberculosis using cryo-tomography. MIM formation depends on ambient nitrate and correlates with innate immune response repression.

With the sheer prevalence of Tuberculosis throughout history, and at present, it is no surprise that the causative agent, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, has developed ways to evade our immune systems. Lusanda covers this and more in the latest HSR blog.
