I'm not surprised:
"SARS-CoV-2 was associated with a 3–4-fold higher population mortality burden than seasonal influenza A despite available countermeasures, and continued to contribute beyond the formal emergency period, underscoring the importance of sustained respiratory virus prevention."
New paper out in Lancet Regional Health Americas, with Alicia Grima, Natalie Wilson, Simran Mann, Ashleigh Tuite and Clara Lee. How many Ontario deaths are attributable to respiratory viruses, and how does SARS-CoV-2 compare to flu? 🧵 doi.org/10.1016/j.la...

Mask up with an N95, and maybe put a candy bowl out while you sit outside?

The subway has been something that has just really scared me in terms of Covid safety given how bananas crowded it can get. But I just needed to finally get my shit together and be brave and do it.

OBVIOUSLY I’ve got my N95 on.

"N95 masks prevented almost all new infections"

#COVID #maskup #N95s #publichealth #publictransportation
A Study of 40 COVID and flu outbreaks on planes found infection risk was highest near infected passengers.

• N95 masks prevented almost all new infections

• Surgical masks filtering 50% of particles cut infections by 85%, versus 35% from doubling clean air

• Ventilation alone may not be enough

The only doctor for miles around wearing a [respirator/N95 mask] is being teased for being a coward by two unmasked very elderly people at the pharmacy…” #COVID

A reminder
for my cautious friends:
by October’s end
everyone is accustomed
to everywhere seeing
skeletons and ghosts
coffins and tombstones,
but please understand
none of those sights
reminds people
of their own mortality
more than you
in an N95 mask does.

And yes, encourage them to wear a well-fitting N95 in crowded indoor spaces. I know. Good luck with that conversation. 🙃

N95 prevented almost all infection. If worn by both source and control.

The fact that my N95 doesn't do jack shit for VOCs is wild, done with it
October 31, 2026 at 11:20 PM
It does, but it doesn't reduce the possibility of infection to zero. It significantly reduces the chances of severe symptoms, hospitalization, and death. And it works to prevent the spread of disease, in conjunction with masking (N95 or KN95 worn properly) and testing. We know this.

"Most importantly, we have learned how the virus can linger in fine aerosols and remain suspended in the air we breathe, much as expelled smoke lingers in poorly ventilated spaces. Similar to second hand smoke, those in close proximity to the infected person inhale more aerosols."

I'm an expert and I participated in research on viral aerosol risks.

I'm also immunocompromised & my family had two brushes w/ SARS in Toronto.

As soon as I heard about a "new virus" I bought a years supply of n95 respirators.

I haven't been sick since since 2019.

N95 masks are sooooo good

crisis averted

This reminds me that I need to reorder n95 masks.
My girlfriend just tested positive for covid which means I probably have it too. After almost 7 years of disciplined masking and trying not to be around people.
October 27, 2026 at 8:48 PM
I've been taking the train with my N95 since September 2024 and it's been 100% there for me since.

Strong recommend.

should i change my pfp to this
November 1, 2026 at 5:36 AM
Still true in 2026! Mask up with an N95 or better & get your backup vaccine this month*! 😷💉

*They take 2 weeks to reach their full effect in your body, so the first two weeks of November is a great time to do it. Late November through January/February is usually peak spread in the USA.
