i read this and my mind exploded. like hey, wait a minute, software engineers are a ncees-covered discipline. are any of these guys even licensed? or are they just code chiropractors?
For one thing, "software engineers" as a group are not experts. They don't have some form of accreditation, there's no standard of knowledge required to be a software engineer. "Listen to software engineers" isn't the same category of statement as "listen to climatologists".

But to be real here, NCEES only offered the Software Engineering PE For 6 years. 13'-19'

Fun fact, only 81 engineers sat the NSPE/NCEES Software Engineering PE from 2013-2019 (5 total exams), and Texas was the first board to licence them in '98 ending it in '06.

All other engineering (i.e. those in recognized field with NCEES PE exams) have a lot of basic similarities. Geo engineering is NOT engineering IMHO because there is no way to account for uncertainties, which is at the heart of engineering.

It has historical use for trains, so I don’t mind that usage. Software engineering is something that annoys me, but I’m not totally against. NCEES a while back tried to create a PE exam for it, but there was not enough interest. It is too different from other engineering.

I sincerely wish the NCEES would bring back the software PE license and exams.
Its just so excessively nontrivial for anyone higher up the stack than CpEs to even apply for a license let alone get one.
Maybe with some more liability we might start caring about consequences of dangerous decisions.

Missouri's requirements for licensure as a "Professional Engineer" are similar to many states:
–BS degree from an accredited engineering program,
–passed both FE Exam and PE Exam, AND
–obtained 4 yrs of satisfactory engineering experience since they received their accredited engineering degree.
