Nivolumab Improves DFS in High-Risk Head & Neck SCC

The Phase 3 NIVOPOSTOP trial (680 patients) showed that adding nivolumab to standard post-op CRT significantly improved DFS in resected LA-SCCHN with high relapse risk. A trend toward better OS was observed, pending final analysis.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) accounts for >90 % of cases of head and neck cancers, and most cases present at a locally advanced (LA) stage [1,2]. Historically, clinical trials grouped oral cavity, oropharyngeal, hypopharyngeal, and laryngeal tumours together as HNSCC [3]. However, human papillomavirus–related, p16-positive oropharyngeal carcinoma is now recognized as a biologically and therapeutically distinct entity [4].
