The Korean War was initiated by the NKPA invading the South in 1950, and US troops had been present to varying degrees since 1945, and troops were quickly transferred from Japan and then badly mauled- but the North's consistent goal was to reunify by force.

It's also where I experienced the only shiny encounter I've ever had in a mainline Pokémon game up to this point, as when I was replaying Sapphire 8-10 years ago, one of the invisible Kecleon here was a shiny! (Old picture of it from around then, don't know where the GBA SP I use is currently)

Clay Blair’s book on the war goes deep on the inadequacies of our troops in Japan. They literally were not expected to see combat. Even Task Force Smith arrogantly believed the NKPA would turn tail at the first sight of GI’s.

Important to remember that initially, the U.S. deployed a task force oriented as a constabulary force, with the naive belief that it would “arrest” the NKPA and restore order swiftly. We know how that worked out. We had to rebuild an army (and Marine Corps) hollowed between 45-50. It’s cyclic.

It's interesting the feelings Terry has for the ROK, and his reaction and descriptions of torture they enacted on the captured NKPA. The contempt for the ROK allies and the brutal torture they inflict reminds me of so many stories about our Vietnamese allies just a few years later.
