🐯🐾🦥🐴🐘🐪 For #FossilFriday, a fantastic mount from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History’s Hall of Fossils. The Smilodon on display — specimen v10928 — is a composite skeleton sourced from the La Brea Tar Pits, CA.

Hans was always kind to me when we’d meet at SVP and generous when I’d interview him. I’ll never forget a NMNH tour where he brought out the Ceratosaurus holotype because he knew I’d love it. What sad news.
Very sad to hear about the passing of Dr. Hans Sues. His last work was the description of Tyrannoroter heberti. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

A portrait sketch a portrait of Diplodocus hallorum based on the skeletal mount at the NMNH. As pointed out by Tess Gallagher, studies like this are a good reminder of how bizarre sauropods probably looked at certain angles.

Should really go to NMNH, since it’s literally on the Mall, IMO.

The snab! I always love to visit Opabinia, an old friend, at the NMNH. And thanks to @jopabinia.bsky.social and colleagues, we now know about two equally-wonderful relatives of this Burgess Shale classic. 🧪
