Have you made your Q3 estimated tax payment yet, or is it still sitting on your to-do list?

September 15 is 8 days out. The penalty for missing it starts accruing from that date. Paying the full amount in April doesn't clear it.

NannyKeeper has your Q3 number ready.

Most parents don't realize that paying your nanny on the books unlocks a tax credit worth up to $6,000 in care expenses. The catch? You can only claim it if those wages were reported properly.

Sitting in a nanny agency intake meeting, signing paperwork, being told to pay in cash to "keep things simple." The agency keeps its placement fee. The family keeps 100% of the IRS liability. That's not a coincidence. It's the structure.

27 days. That's how long until the Q3 estimated tax payment is due for household employers. September 15 is the deadline.

Miss it and the penalty starts accruing from that date, not from April. A late Q3 payment costs more than a late Q4 for exactly that reason.

Social Security tax stops at a certain income level. Medicare tax doesn't.

In 2026, once your nanny earns $176,100, the 6.2% Social Security withholding stops for both of you. But the 1.45% Medicare tax keeps going on every dollar after that, with no ceiling.

When your employer pays you on the books, they're legally required to match your Social Security and Medicare contributions dollar for dollar. That's 7.65% of your wages paid by them, not you. A 1099 worker gets no match and pays the full 15.3% alone.

The week you file taxes for the first time as a household employer, your home address becomes the official address of record with the IRS. Not a suite number. Not a registered agent. Just where you live. NannyKeeper handles the paperwork that makes that feel less strange.

Did you run the numbers on dependent care benefits before your nanny's first payday? Most families don't. You can set aside up to $5,000 in a dependent care FSA to pay for nanny costs with pre-tax dollars. There's also a separate tax credit for childcare expenses.

A Google search that didn't have to happen: "is my nanny an employee or contractor?"

The IRS already answered it. If you control when they show up, how they work, and what they do, that's an employee. A contract saying otherwise doesn't change the test.

Switching nannies mid-year? Worth a quick check before the year ends. The filing threshold resets per worker, not per household. So if each caregiver earned $3,000 or more, you're looking at two W-2s come January.

7.65%. That's the slice of your paycheck that goes to Social Security and Medicare when you're paid on the books. Your employer pays the other 7.65% out of their own pocket. Your take-home isn't cut in half. It's cut by less than 8 cents on the dollar.

That 7.65% number? That's your share of payroll taxes on top of whatever wage you agreed to pay. Most new household employers don't see that coming until they're already writing checks.

Hiring a nanny quietly turns you into something the IRS treats like a small business.

Most parents assume W-2 season is something big companies deal with. It's not. When we built the year-end form logic inside NannyKeeper, we found that household employers share the exact same January 31 federal deadline as every Fortune 500.
