There is no ironclad safeguard. Requiring formal Congressional action would simply give commanders a clear rationale for rejecting an order as illegal.

Now, there isn't a clear line between a legal and illegal order: The NatSec "everything is fine" crowd are either deluded or just pretending.

It's insane that we still have no safeguards other than mutiny.

I've raised this with high-ranking NatSec officials, and they angrily denied it. But when I ask what barrier is there to a president issuing a nuclear attack order on a whim, they just say it would be illegal. As if that's a barrier.

I’m glad you are!

I guess I meant why aren’t Dem electeds and commentators using it as a talking point that Republicans are bad on natsec.

In a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the top House Oversight Democrat, Rep. Robert Garcia, wants an explanation from the Trump admin. about its decision to allow defeated Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro into the U.S. | Politico NatSecDaily

i think a lot about how serious FP/natsec people follow me and instead get this instead of my articles

I genuinely don’t get why we don’t discuss renewables as a national security issue! There’s no Strait of Hormuz to close when it comes to sunlight!

It just feels like an entire narrative/persuasion strategy left wanting because some people have decided the right wing owns natsec as a concept.

I'm not saying Chinese cars *should* be banned (there are NatSec arguments for it, I am not fully convinced by those but they are worth thinking about). I'm saying the above argument doesn't fully capture the market dynamics in the US, that's all.

He didn’t win the Afghanistan war at all. 4 years. He ended it w what his NatSec Advisor, Gen HR McMaster, called a U.S. surrender.

Why didn’t you win Afghanistan quickly, or at all?
Your own NatSec advisor, Gen HR McMaster, called your resolution of Afghanistan a U.S. surrender.

It's the Atlantic. Graeme Wood's recent Gaza coverage all the way back to his "What ISIS Really Wants" a decade ago. Portrayal of Islam, Muslims, & particularly Palestinians can't be a surprise to their readers at this point. Islamophobia, establishment liberalism and hawkish natsec is the brand

Thank you. Where else would we find out about important issues around the globe? Our journalists have been silenced & news media is a sad billionaire propaganda machine. This threat to natsec is likened to yelling fire in a theater.
Free speech must serve the public good as intended. Legislation Now

it's weird because OSC (STRATCAP? can we make that happen?) is already dumping public money on all kinds of marginal, vaguely natsec/defense-production projects/producers in exchange for shares, with no apparent strategy or rationale

I agree. The NSS is “tell me you don’t understand national security without telling me you understand natsec”

Didn’t you know, Mike? Fox News & ICCC are also incubators for natsec geniuses so they can run a 3 million person cabinet department like they’re starting a car.

It is. I was just thinking that they could boot her early. Though looking at what committees she’s on, she’s not on any big ones or the critical foreign policy/natsec ones. So probably not worth the fight

The Kochs natsec funded institutions are all genteely isolationist and politely nativist. They advocate for the US to pull back w/in its borders, fortify them, & become very selective in terms of who may or may not immigrate.

China has reportedly helped Iran kill troops, but it's not biggie for Trump: "Somebody said, 'China is spying on us, sir.' And I said, 'Yeah, we're spying on them too. Don't worry about it.' They said, 'It's terrible, China, Russia, they're spying on us sir!' I said, 'it's true."
