🏺Love the look of this guy - a souvenir jug (likely made to look like St Menas) from Naukratis, now in the collection at Harrogate Museums. 📜

abasetcollections.com/Objects/Deta...
A souvenir pottery jug in the form of a human head, probably of Saint Menas, from Naukratis. Its neck rises from the crown of the head and a handle from the shoulder. Large nose and wide painted eyes, a dimpled chin, and hair across the forehead and flanking the face, the hair is indicated by vertical striations. The top of the head tapers up to a rim with a double-moulded edge, and the vessel stands on a flaring foot, now damaged. A handle extends from the mouth to the back of the head. Two-piece mould, or made in two parts, with an applied handle. The eyes are painted red-brown and white, and there is black on the mouth and hair; a band around the rim is red and there is red colour on the mouth

The critique itself is remarkably self-centered and self-evidently so.

We know Socrates said these things because Plato wrote them down. (Plato also apocryphally visited the Pyramids, which were close-ish to a Greek trading post in Egypt called Naukratis (‘Naval Command’) & would’ve had tourism.).

Just found a reference to Milesian wool in Egypt that predates Zenon's rearing of prize Milesian sheep. As Clarysse notes, it's in Naukratis w its Milesian connections, But still cool to see this in 282 BCE.

PS Abolish ICE. Impeach Trump. Put GOP on trial.

I was reminded by @johnjjohnston.bsky.social that today is the birthday of Alexandria. The guardian of this city was the friendly snake, Agathos Damon, who became associated with Serapis and joined with Isis. Here’s an image of the two from Naukratis.
