I didn’t sleep well, so this morning has been pretty rough, but it was improved by this lovely little friend I found on the street. (Hieroglyphic cicada; Neocicada hieroglyphica) The blue-green was even more vivid in real life!
A cicada sits on an asphalt roadway, although it’s small enough and zoomed in enough that the asphalt looks like a field of stones. (The body length, not counting the wings, would have fit on the first joint of my thumb, much smaller than the other annual cicadas found around here.) The cicada looks like bronze that’s started to oxidize; its abdomen is bronze, but its head and thorax are mottled bronze and black and blue-green. Its legs and wing veins are also green, although not as vivid as the body. There are some black markings on the otherwise clear wings.

Here's a few of my (many) favorite #macro photos for the last day of this #Invertefest.
1. Gulf Fritilary #butterfly, Agraulis vanillae
2. Tropical Orbweaver, Eriophora ravilla
3. A cicada in genus Neocicada
4 A mantis in genus Stagmomantis.

An orange butterfly spotted with silvery white markings viewed from the front as it rests on some tiny white flowers. A chonky brown spider hanging in her web. Her rust brown legs, covered in spine like hairs are held close to her body. Her eyes, small and red peer out from beneath a large abdomen that looks rather like a ritz cracker. A photo of the front of a brown cicada with large, dark eyes as it rests on a light colored surface. The front of a tan praying mantis, it's raptorial arms held at the ready, it's triangular head, with large brownish purple eyes tilted slightly towards the camera

Oh thank you! 😻. We get some weird colors on a variety of things here, like this brown version of Neocicada hieroglyphica (I have seen the green too)

Yeah I have seen the green ones infrequently, but for some reason the ones I see the most often are these brown ones. I cannot find anything on the net to explain the difference and some of the brown ones on bugguide are some of my old sightings 😂 bugguide.net/node/view/1830907
