It sounds a bit flippant but older men are often socially apathetic and quite lonely so an energetic networker with money who can make friends, keep in touch and organise get-togethers is very powerful
There’s so much Freud-inflected social theory about the power of elite charisma on crowds, but none that I know of about intra-elite charisma. It remains odd how people like Blair and Mandelson (to name just two) fell so completely under the spell of other powerful elites.
