#Neuraminidase
I want to point out this doctor is recommending Tamiflu (oseltamivir), the antiviral used to treat/prevent influenza infection, for treatment of hantavirus.

Tamiflu works by inhibiting the enzyme neuraminidase, which influenza viruses use.

Hantaviruses do not even contain the enzyme neuraminidase.
Hey, guess what! There's nothing to worry about when it comes to Hantavirus because Ivermectin & Hydroxychloroquine can magically cure you just like it did for COVID-19! 🤮

Cool paper from Florian Kramer & colleagues about a novel feature of circulating H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4. These viruses have a longer stalk in their neuraminidase (NA) enzyme, a key viral protein. This was not seen in past H5N1 strains (2002-2019)
Why does it matter?🧪

In the end, #CDC was able to subtype the neuraminidase — the N of this #birdflu virus' name. It is the same #H5N1 that has been spreading in cows.
CDC submitted the genetic sequences of the hemagglutinin & the neuraminidase proteins to GISAID.
Updated: The contact and the confirmed case became ill the same day, suggesting a possible mutual exposure. Missouri's Dept of Health & Senior Services says serological testing "is being considered."
A health worker experienced mild symptoms, but tested negative for flu. #H5N1 #birdflu
The plot thickens: #CDC reveals a close contact of the Missouri #H5 #birdflu case was sick at the same time but wasn't tested. Not clear why that info wasn't shared Thurs during an hour-long press briefing when CDC said Missouri was looking like a "one-off" case. www.statnews.com/2024/09/13/h...

Historically, most bird flu vaccines have concentrated primarily on the hemagglutinin protein. However, researchers here explored whether

including neuraminidase could enhance vaccine efficacy. In its viral form, H5 acts like a key allowing the virus to enter and attach itself to host cells where it then starts to replicate. Vaccines with small, safe doses of H5 prompt the body to recognize, remember and destroy the problematic

current mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. For influenza, the neuraminidase protein is conserved across many strains of flu, prompting the immune response to multiple strains. The protein hemagglutinin is used to standardize flu vaccines because it is much more abundant on the surface of the virus. However, it

Flu vaccines work, but they can be improved. If we are going to improve flu vaccines, let’s really improve them to protect as broadly as possible against the flu viruses that we are dealing with now and in the future. I’m on Team Neuraminidase Inclusivity!

Exciting discovery that could help pave the way to a universal flu vaccine. Currently typical flu vax target flu-hemagglutinin (HA) protein as we see a strong immune response but HA is variable meaning annual vax updates. research focused on the less variable neuraminidase (NA) of flu. #immunosky 🧪🧵

Influenza virus is continually changing. Dangerous new strains appear and threaten public health.
Two molecules cover the surface and together control the infectivity of the virus: hemagglutinin and neuraminidase

Also for those who are curious- neuraminidase inhibitors prevent the virus from exiting the cells it infects to go on to infect more cells because the virus gets stuck to the cell’s sugars on the surface with its hemagglutinin protein (the neuraminidase enzyme cleaves them off normally). However…

Utiliser davantage d'anticorps ciblant la protéine neuraminidase (le N de H1N1, H3N2, etc) et non l'hémagglutinine (le H) permettrait de gagner en protection contre l'infection et la transmission du virus.
