also just look at the Wikipedia article for neurosteroids and prog and its metabolites tbh. this isn't particularly cutting edge stuff.

🚨 NEW PAPER 🚨
Thrilled to share our latest work in "The Neurobiology of Stress" where we highlight the intricate roles of neuropeptides and neurosteroids in psychiatric disorders, & how new technologies can answer old questions about these important signallers. sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Expanding our understanding of (mal)adapted stress physiology in psychiatric disorders: achieving single-cell characterisation of steroids and neuropeptides
Steroid hormones and neurosteroids (collectively neuroactive steroids), alongside neuropeptides, are key modulators of the central nervous system. The…

She did it! 🎉

Congratulations to Corinna on a successful PhD defense about photocatalysis and neurosteroids.

Very well deserved and best of luck on the next chapter! 🚀

honestly seems a lot safer than the oral 100mg i was on briefly too: no presystemic conversion of most of it into neurosteroids? wtf why is oral always the default for administrating everything

neurosteroids are absolutely fascinating as a topic and underappreciated as a factor in mental health. this is definitely worth a read.
Before I started hormone therapy, I studied all the side effects and knew what to expect long before my first doctor’s appointment.

But it wasn’t until I put my reporter hat on that I realized how much more there is beneath the surface. And it’s really cool.
The surprising ways hormones can change your body
Hormone therapy can have profound effects on our immune systems, gut bacteria, our brains, senses and sex lives.

yes, oral prog is mostly all broken down in the liver and its metabolites are neurosteroids, functioning like benzos, you are getting a benzo high and not a lot of prog (i mean at this dose maybe a decent amount tbh)

afaik it has neurosteroidal effects in basically all forms except medroxyprogesterone injections. ive heard here and there that it has MORE of one if you take it orally, because the first pass metabolism that destroys it usually destroys it by converting it to said neurosteroids

Part of the issue is that taking it orally causes like 97%+ of the progesterone to get metabolized into things which aren't progesterone, including two very potent neurosteroids pregnanolone and allopregnanolone. Some of these metabolites are still progestogenic, but not all of them.

the study data on cis women and other mammals indicates elevated progesterone typically lowers libido, but also it also partly metabolizes into neurosteroids which can make you feel good … i wouldn’t be shocked/disappointed if it doesn’t work the way some trans women experience it
