#NewYearTraditions - Calennig 🍏

🍏Calennig is a Welsh tradition of the giving of gifts and money on New Year's Day and is still practiced in Wales. Children would visit households, carrying an apple skewered with three sticks to form a tripod and embellished with holly, box, hazelnuts and fruit 1/2
Vintage black and white photograph of two very serious faced young boys, wearing caps, coats and scarves around their necks - both stripey - and each carrying a calennig apple - skewered with three sticks and decorated with holly and hazelnuts. A coloured photograph of a table top with six calennig apples - all pierced with three sticks that forms a tripod and is holding each apple that has been decorated with green foliage - holly, pine tree twigs and pierced with hazelnuts or cloves. In the background is the head and shoulders of a grinning young boy, wearing black spectacles and a black hoodie.

#NewYearTraditions Coventry Godcakes are triangular shaped puff pastries filled with sweet mincemeat. Their shape is said to represent the Holy Trinity and at New Year's in the city, it was traditional for godparents to give them to their godchildren armed with a blessing for the year ahead.

On New Year's Day, we took off to Porto San Giorgio on the East (Adriatic) coast for a delicious fishy lunch with friends at Ristorante Altamarea. This fab dish had more seafood than spaghetti! A sack of scallops and a mass of prawns in a slightly spicy tomato sauce!

There are no new year resolution, only yule boasting
dragon-in-a-fez this will be the year I finally convince everyone to abandon New Year’s resolutions in favour of Yule Boasting, the clearly superior tradition --- dragon-in-a-fez allow me to explain. Yule boasting is an old Norse tradition of getting shitfaced at the winter solstice feast and standing up to proclaim all the great, infamous, and wildly improbable deeds you will perform in the coming year. can range from an unlikely but technically possible claim, like “I’m going to rob 300 banks”, to something you’d have to bend the laws of the universe to actually accomplish, like “I’m going to punch a god in the dick and steal his horse”. these are not plans. they’re not even goals. they’re the things you’d do in a self-insert superhero fanfic. and honestly all I want this holiday season is for a bunch of friends to go all in on this nonsense with me and hype ourselves up in ways previously unimaginable.

From Trinbago to the wider African Diaspora — black-eyed peas & rice at New Year isn’t just a meal.
It’s intention.
It’s remembrance.
Ancestors teaching us to call in abundance even when things are uncertain.
We eat. We honour. We continue. ✨
