A few years before quicktime In 1988 Newtek was doing this for a video digitizer product they never released. This was a demo they would show live at CES with a sign saying "This is not video tape". Running it was a bitch so the demo was never released to the public.

Good news: Tricaster works!
Bad news: when restored…yeah, the software requires registration with Newtek or else you’re subject to a 90 day timebomb. Thankfully I have a registered dump, but this also means said dump cannot be shared. And even then you’re still at the mercy of Newtek/Vizrt.
