According to my agent, the whole market is soft. Usually, it’s a bit easier to do Nonfic than Fic (smaller pond), but the nonfic market has dried up too. People aren’t buying books. Publishers aren’t taking risks. EXCEPT in one area. Audio. Now, the bad news first: that largely means Audible. But 2/

Really and truly so, so helpful. I know lots about fiction pitches and queries but was completely at sea for nonfic and your advice helped me put together a proposal that my agent said was one of the most professional they'd seen.

i think if political essays or some kinds of heavy nonfic &c. are difficult for you to attend to or process or w/e, it's easy to get in the habit of assuming you never actually "want" to read those things. but often, that isn't so!

Getting commissions for books can be wild.
These guys came to me came from Outlaws Inc. the PanMacmillan nonfic book I did tracking arms smugglers in planes, & “wondered if I want to turn it into a kids’ book”.
I was like, ‘What, arms dealing? NO!’
They said, ‘Er, no, planes.’ So that was nice.

Some riveting NF titles: Feather Detective ('25), I Am Not a Robot ('26), Heart of a Stranger ('25), In Pain ('19), How Things Are Made ('25), The Most Human: Reconciling with...Father Leonard Nimoy ('24), 97 Orchard ('10). Try these!

I recently finished rupauls which definitely has dark themes but was really interesting and made me want to read more nonfic this year (I’m reading 2 fiction books rn but still 😂) my next is prob gonna be who better than you by will packer which isn’t a memoir but fun positive nonfiction
