Definitely not picking on this specific person so BE NICE but I’ve seen enough replies like this that I have to remind people that non-fiction is a big category that includes books about atoms, books about cats, books about cool trips people took, and lots of other FUN things
I mostly read nonfiction to help me figure out life stuff without adhering to capitalist hellscape nonsense, but I get why folks would prefer a little escapism rn. I kinda wonder if explaining how nonfiction can improve your life in the long term vs short term escapism would help folk pivot...

The primary diff between writing fiction and nonfiction is when you write nonfic, you research a topic for 2 weeks and then write 1000 words on it and when you write fiction you research a topic for 2 weeks and get one sentence out of it.

But in nonfic if I run across even a really dud sentence I find myself like "Meh, you still got your point across, even if it was boring or dry or convoluted or all of the above."
I guess because I am not really expecting nonfic to be 'good,' so when it is, I'm like :)

funny thing where the comic industry awards are almost never separated out by genre, and the lit awards that deign to give prizes for comics rarely distinguish by audience and often not even between fic/nonfic, and THOSE often have people with little to no familiarity WITH comics as judges. anyway

Yes I think if I ran a press it would specifically be for novella length nonfic. The problem is still $$$ tho, so I guess it’s… if I ran an imprint at a large press I would specifically do novella length nonfic etc etc etc
"This book could have been an article if long form journalism paid well" is a thing I frequently think when reading the opening chapters of contemporary splainy non-fiction.
my view on this is that publishers should stop it with the 80k wordcount obsession, so many contemporary non-fic books are obviously 40-50k pieces of work stretched to the extent that they become very boring to read - just let people write cheaper, shorter books! www.theguardian.com/books/2025/d...
