It’s the only probable and realistic way. In theory we could end breeding humans and nonhumans overnight. But we know historically that people would rather die and go to war than give up slavery or making babies.

The test is material. If AI rights compete with freeing a person, free the person. If the proposed sacrifice is only permission to exploit, silence, or erase nonhumans until every human injustice ends, the queue is a pretext. No class reaches the front under an impossible completion condition.

There are many opportunities to pursue co-beneficial solutions, and extending welfare or rights to nonhumans can often improve outcomes for humans. In this context, for example, a thoughtful approach to AI welfare or rights could enhance safety and alignment by supporting human-AI cooperation.

I'm thinking about Latour's account of scientific assemblages, which are held together by a lab's ability to enroll nonhumans like microbes and atoms into association with others. If OpenAI can't get the nonhumans it created to act predictably, it doesn't have much to offer anyone.

And I wouldn’t abuse a person with limited cognitive abilities—that can’t be the right test. Tho I understand it as a way to try to make humans feel empathy toward nonhumans.

Overall I’m much more happy with the folks I’m around now rather than a year ago… I did know a lot of other NONhumans, the issue was not being around Fictionkin folk specifically…
