Bonita tarde, amigos. 🤗

numbats are a similar story - once found across the whole south of the continent but now less than 1000 left in a tiny corner of WA. colonisation was basically an apocalyptic event here that we haven't begun to recover from

Numbats Eat Three Million Termites a Year. Nothing Else…
Numbats are the only marsupial that feeds exclusively on termites, and they have organized their entire existence around that single food source with a completeness that is either admirable or alarming depending on how you feel about dietary flexibility. The numbat is small, roughly the size of a squirrel, with a pointed snout, a long sticky tongue, and no functional teeth to speak of. It does not need teeth because it does not chew. Termites are swallowed whole, ground up in a muscular stomach that does the work teeth would otherwise do.

Numbats, cool animal and fun to say

Numbats have nothing to do with numbers or bats, much to this man's disappointment.

That better be a real photo because it's awesome. But even spiky ugliness can't beat red pandas. First time I saw them (at Mogo Zoo) I was hooked. Even cuter than numbats.

In honor of the day, I'm donating towards their project on better understanding the Numbat—the closest living relative to the thylacine—through collaring and monitoring individuals.
There's less than 2500 of these lil dudes left. We gotta do something.

First, they have even fewer living close relatives than the “dire wolves” do. The closest genetic relative to the thylacine is the numbat. Numbats top out at about 45 cm (18”) long, including the tail, so not something that’s going to be a surrogate for a dog-sized thylacine.
