#ORTHOGRAPHY
Normally when I learn languages I just don't really teach myself the alphabets, I just start learning words and figure out orthography as I'm going along, so it's interesting to be doing it this way ig.

It's crazy that I stumbled across this thread bc the Gerudo language also inspired my furry conlang, specifically the orthography

And the concept for yours looks so interesting omg

Emirati Arabic word of the day (east coast)
كما كيه
kamā kēh
'how'

ex
kamā kēh ʕayā?
'How (are you) then?'

n.b.
1. This usage is recorded by Aḥmad ʕUbayd (2006, p.44), but it is totally unfamiliar to me!
2. The orthography is unclear.
3. ʕayā < ʕayal < ʕaǧal 'then'

"at least that's what we think he announced. Owing to some linguistic inexactitudes and the lack of a recognised orthography he may have just bought a horse."

I see your pedantry and raise it: in Old English orthography, both eth and thorn were used interchangeably for the voiced and voiceless consonants depending on the scribe, so in the context of the implied time period within the comic this is period-accurate!

It’s just an English word with Welsh orthography. It’s not the actual Cymraeg

"mhici" in Irish orthography isn't a PERFECT stand in for "wiki" but it IS as close as it gets. Like, what are we sacrificing here? Using a typically grammatical sound lexically? The compromise they ended up using introduced a whole loan-word-only LETTER.

@ncweaver.skerry-tech.com I’m proud to be on Trump’s enemies list. Pardon me, in his orthography it’s probably “ENEMY’S List.”

Derheybn? Mekhtike leybn?

The usual issue reading Yiddish (transcribed Yiddish - I can't read Hebrew letters sadly). 90% is just German apart from the orthography, and then the rest is difficult to incomprohensible. (Even when German-derived, as the latter certainly and I suspect the first is)

i may not be irish but in polish we have the similar thing of loan words being altered to fit the orthographic rules for words, i'm really not sure how loan words being written as in their original languages is any better than attempts to put it into irish orthography, we hate those in polish

I remember the Uyghur case quite well - Uyghur can be written in both Perso-Arabic and Cyrillic, and so we changed the platform to accommodate both orthographies, rather than take a linguistic ideological position ("which orthography is correct / standard / valourised?").

funn:)

i am a sucker for weird orthography, outside of citations i don't think i've ever seen this. i kinda like how it looks.

AND look the wiki for 'brackets' actually has it! but it has it with no citation lol:

Of course some idiots write it without a trema on the U so I have to mute that orthography too…

Trump could spell potato “F-U-C-K-Y-U” and the NYT would tell us that it meant we needed a new orthography to understand his genius

When you're hanging on the "on hold" for fucking DPD so long... that you had time to check the Jozic-Cvijanović Croatian Orthography and check the IPA. Then send the complaint to HAKOM that they are not using the 71-10-01/1-24-2 Croatian Language Law correct language and...

in the 1860s they even tried to cyrillicize Polish (badly, it was a Russian based orthography and not one actually suited to Polish), but the attempts failed

no one should settle for anything less than a brahmic abugida*

*as long as they agree to periodically reform the orthography to delete consonants that haven't been pronounced in 500 years

It’s an issue for certain. I’ve encountered a few student (not my own) who want *nothing* to do with anything even near religion. Or Zionism. Which is Really quite limiting.

But the alef-beis issue is a new one.

Give them DP camp papers in Polish orthography?

i find transliteration so interesting because it's basically folk phonology and orthography—non-linguists having to think critically about the sounds of their own language, the sounds of the target language, and how to use their language's writing system to bridge the two
