i may not be irish but in polish we have the similar thing of loan words being altered to fit the orthographic rules for words, i'm really not sure how loan words being written as in their original languages is any better than attempts to put it into irish orthography, we hate those in polish

"mhici" in Irish orthography isn't a PERFECT stand in for "wiki" but it IS as close as it gets. Like, what are we sacrificing here? Using a typically grammatical sound lexically? The compromise they ended up using introduced a whole loan-word-only LETTER.

I see your pedantry and raise it: in Old English orthography, both eth and thorn were used interchangeably for the voiced and voiceless consonants depending on the scribe, so in the context of the implied time period within the comic this is period-accurate!

Of course some idiots write it without a trema on the U so I have to mute that orthography too…

Is the name of that great Armenian writer of poetry and fairy tales Tumanyan? Tumanean? Toumanian? This article explains folds although it pivoted into transliteration and Romanisation with something of a potted history of Armenian orthography reforms.

Transliterate for display, fold for finding · Tetrak OCR
Armenia's national poet appears on book covers as Tumanyan, Tumanean, Toumanyan and Tumanian, and all four are correct. A fold is how one search finds them all, and explaining it shows why a translite...

When you're hanging on the "on hold" for fucking DPD so long... that you had time to check the Jozic-Cvijanović Croatian Orthography and check the IPA. Then send the complaint to HAKOM that they are not using the 71-10-01/1-24-2 Croatian Language Law correct language and...

Normally when I learn languages I just don't really teach myself the alphabets, I just start learning words and figure out orthography as I'm going along, so it's interesting to be doing it this way ig.

I have been doing some work that relies on determining whether text is written following Classical Armenian orthography or the reformed variant more commonly used in the Republic of Armenia. Interestingly, it mostly came down to counting the letter ւ.

tetrak.dev/articles/202...
Telling classical from reformed Armenian by counting one letter · Tetrak OCR
Armenian is printed in two orthographies with the same alphabet, and a book's title is no guide to which one its pages use. One letter is: the reform left ւ only one place to stand, so counting it any...

I remember the Uyghur case quite well - Uyghur can be written in both Perso-Arabic and Cyrillic, and so we changed the platform to accommodate both orthographies, rather than take a linguistic ideological position ("which orthography is correct / standard / valourised?").

It's crazy that I stumbled across this thread bc the Gerudo language also inspired my furry conlang, specifically the orthography

And the concept for yours looks so interesting omg

Derheybn? Mekhtike leybn?

The usual issue reading Yiddish (transcribed Yiddish - I can't read Hebrew letters sadly). 90% is just German apart from the orthography, and then the rest is difficult to incomprohensible. (Even when German-derived, as the latter certainly and I suspect the first is)

Emirati Arabic word of the day (east coast)
كما كيه
kamā kēh
'how'

ex
kamā kēh ʕayā?
'How (are you) then?'

n.b.
1. This usage is recorded by Aḥmad ʕUbayd (2006, p.44), but it is totally unfamiliar to me!
2. The orthography is unclear.
3. ʕayā < ʕayal < ʕaǧal 'then'

It’s an issue for certain. I’ve encountered a few student (not my own) who want *nothing* to do with anything even near religion. Or Zionism. Which is Really quite limiting.

But the alef-beis issue is a new one.

Give them DP camp papers in Polish orthography?

@ncweaver.skerry-tech.com I’m proud to be on Trump’s enemies list. Pardon me, in his orthography it’s probably “ENEMY’S List.”

Trump could spell potato “F-U-C-K-Y-U” and the NYT would tell us that it meant we needed a new orthography to understand his genius
