I’m a big fan of Clickhouse for observability with their otlp ingest and HTTP SQL endpoint (and an agent pointed at the latter). Also keeping an eye on smithclay.github.io/duckdb-otlp/ for the same sort of stack with DuckDB.

So there is an OTLP endpoint (you have my attention), it's part of X-Ray (ehhh), but it writes spans to CloudWatch Logs ($$$), where it can be read by Application Signals? WTF is going on here?

The first knob to tweak is using the most efficient encoding -- this means using OTLP/proto instead of OTLP/json. But there's a lot more tweaking to do beyond that.

I'd be curious about writing the full unsampled firehose to S3. That can be a lot of data! Were there any hurdles there?
