Macromedia focused on web development and design - an area where Adobe had previously lagged - and owned products like Dreamweaver, ColdFusion, and Flash. Adobe, a company with little internet experience, had no idea what to do with it.

Before Macromedia, Adobe was a company that made (or bought and incubated) tools for designers and other creatives, mostly in the pre-internet era. Sadly, this became a problem when it acquired one of the strongest players in the Internet space, as Adobe didn’t really know what to do with it. Let’s take Dreamweaver, which combined both a WYSIWYG visual editor (which stands for “what you see is what you get,” and allows people to create web pages by dragging and dropping elements), as well as a conventional text editor. While it’s still offered by Adobe, Dreamweaver sits largely dormant, having faded from relevance because the WYSIWYG editor produced code that was clunky, hard to read and edit, and contained a bunch of superfluous HTML lines that got in the way of things, which, to be fair, was a problem with most WYSIWYG editors at the time, like Microsoft FrontPage. Although DreamWeaver’s text editing capabilities were pretty solid for the time, they were swiftly surpassed by alternatives (like Sublime Text 2) many of which were either free, or markedly cheaper than DreamWeaver. Adobe ColdFusion barely limps on in legacy web applications that were built using the technology, and thus can’t be easily ported to another programming language. And buddy, nobody is developing new apps in ColdFusion. ColdFusion doesn’t even register on the TIOBE Index — a list of programming languages ranked by popularity. Meanwhile, Classic Visual Basic (which Microsoft ceased supporting in 1998), COBOL, and Delphi/ObjectPascal do. Nor, for that matter, does it appear on the latest list of top programming languages from IEEE Spectrum. It’s utterly irrelevant.

Spent a few hours re-wrapping a "missing" #libsodium function, only to find the official Pascal overload was there the whole time. Lesson learned: Windows Explorer is a terrible code search tool. Trust the IDE, not the OS.
