Behold: Voss' goldenrod (Solidago vossii)!

1 of 2 endemic plant species in Michigan and one of our rarest - found in only 2 counties

Recognized as a new species and named for Ed Voss in 2010

Also, fun fact: the only known octoploid (2n=72) goldenrod in the world

The sub-irrigation really does make it easy.
Then just latched things on to a tomato cage.
But
Those genetics are fun. They are triploids.
Diploid crossed with a tetraploid.
Divide it in half.
2 becomes 1
4 becomes 2
They make a 3
You can make more
5 is pentaploid
Dahlias are 8 octoploid

Jumping Genes Decode Strawberry Origins: USDA Tool Skips Extinct Ancestors
Crop genome evolution tools just got a major upgrade: USDA scientists used mobile DNA timestamps embedded in plant chromosomes to date three ancient mergers that built the octoploid strawberry — all without sequencing extinct ancestors — with direct implications for wheat, cotton, and sugarcane polyploid crop breeding.

DNA time stamps reveal the strawberry's surprising origins
A new study introduces a genome-wide approach for untangling these complex genetic histories. The method takes advantage of evolutionary signatures left behind by long terminal repeat retrotransposons, a type of mobile DNA sequence. By comparing patterns of similarity among these elements across chromosomes, researchers can identify distinct subgenomes and estimate when major genome-merging events occurred. When applied to the cultivated octoploid strawberry, the technique revealed a step-by-step evolutionary history shaped by multiple rounds of allopolyploidization, providing new insight into how complex plant genomes form and diversify over millions of years. Why Polyploid Genomes Are Difficult To Decipher Whole-genome duplication has played a major role in plant evolution, helping drive innovation, adaptation, and the emergence of many crop species. In allopolyploid plants, chromosome sets originate from different ancestral genomes. These chromosome groups, known as subgenomes, continue to evolve and interact long after the original hybridization events. Identifying those subgenomes is crucial for understanding how a species evolved. Traditional approaches often depend on comparing a polyploid genome with known diploid ancestors. The problem is that many ancestral species are either extinct or have not yet been identified. Transposable elements offer another source of information. Long terminal repeat retrotransposons accumulate in characteristic patterns...

Modern commercial strawberries are octoploid (they have 8 strands of DNA instead of the usual two). This was done through early forms of genetic manipulation to make them bigger and sweeter than they otherwise would be.

Took about a week to build, test, and validate, but by understanding the octoploid biology instead of forcing reads into a diploid box, we turned a "failed" alignment into a clear map of each edited locus across all four sub-genomes.

I recently built PolySNiP-nf because standard CRISPR tools failed in polyploids. When a colleague’s octoploid strawberry data showed 30% "missing" reads and false chimera calls, the issue wasn't the sequencing, it was the diploid assumptions built into the software.

Apparently cultivated strawberries have 8 sets of chromosomes (octoploid) instead of the usual 1 or 2 in plants. Bizarre

A lot of food plants do that, don't they? So like octoploid or tetraploid sets of chromosomes give giant fruit, blooms, seeds, or whatever?
