False blister beetles (Coleoptera: Oedemeridae) get their name because many look similar to true blister beetles (Meloidae). Unlike the Meloidae, however, most of these insects do not produce the irritating chemical known as cantharidin. Great Basin National Park, Nevada, 18 May 2016.

Here’s the pretty blue(ish) Beetle Ischnomera cyanea. One of the Oedemeridae family. Spotted on one of our recent walks, much to my delight! #Beetles #Coleoptera

Saw lots of these small beetles on flowers in the Mojave Desert last week. I think this is a false blister beetle (family Oedemeridae). Most were busy just doing regular beetle things, drinking nectar/feeding on pollen. #Bugsky 🐙🌿

I’m a thin skinned cosmopolitan writing beetle (oedemeridae) that pollinates plays for theatrical production. 🌱🧪💙📚

It’s the perfect summer weather to be spotting members of the Oedemeridae, the false blister beetles. Beautiful metallic colours frolicking on meadow vegetation. This thick legged flower beetle is pumped! 🪲 💚 #InsectWeek

This week is @insectweek run by @royentsoc and your local burial ground is a great place to #standtallforthesmall and see how many of the UK's 24,000 insect species you can spot, like this Oedemeridae (false blister beetle).

Swollen-thighed Beetle
Oedemera nobilis, also known as the false oil beetle, thick-legged flower beetle or swollen-thighed beetle, is a beetle in the family Oedemeridae, a common species in Western Europe, including the south of England- this one was on West Yorkshire- not seen one before

Oedemera
1. I have developed an ‘inordinate fondness for beetles’ ; Coleoptera, & especially, but not exclusively, the Oedemeridae. It includes Oedemera nobilis (Scopoli, 1763), Swollen-thighed beetle.

Waarschijnlijk een schijnboktor (familie Oedemeridae).

I’ve now reviewed my records of Oedemeridae. Just 1 record of Ischomera cyanea, lots of Oedemera nobilis (Swollen-thighed Beetle, aka Thick-legged Flower Beetle) & a few O. lurida. I’ve struggled a bit with the latter - seems to me that the keys overstate the difference in elytra gape. #UKBeetles

Hm.. Kann aber auch gut sein, dass die Bestimmung da daneben gelaufen ist... Die Art sollte eigentlich wirklich richtig grün sein. Evtl. ist es doch eine der anderen Oedemera-Arten🤷

Nacerdes melanura (Oedemeridae) is an introduced species in N America, with most records from east, esp along Atlantic seaboard. Some accounts describe it as cosmopolitan. Couldn’t find it in general British insect books, perhaps not common there? 2/n

I’ve come to realize that, although the Wharf Borer (Nacerdes melanura) (Coleoptera: Oedemeridae) appears to be fairly distinctive on this side of the Atlantic, in Britain, for example, the Common Red Soldier Beetle (Rhagonycha fulva) (Cantharidae) could be mistaken for N. melanura.
