Squatting Shaman Figure carved jade c. 1200-500 BCE Olmec culture Mexico Artificial cranial deformation (head shaping) was widely practiced by the Olmec society beginning in the early pre-Classic period (1400–1000 BCE). They developed a distinctive pear-shaped or bulging forehead style. The shaping started during infancy while an infant's cranial bones and sutures were still soft and pliable. Historians and archaeologists believe the modified, prominent foreheads symbolized spiritual power, elite social status, and identity, traits often linked to Olmec rulers and depicted in their art. As the "mother culture" of Mesoamerica, the Olmecs passed this tradition of cranial modification down to later civilizations in the region, such as the Maya.

A pre-Columbian stone sculpture belonging to the ancient Olmec culture of Mesoamerica, dating approximately to the Middle Preclassic period (1200–400 BCE). A kneeling or seated adult human, often interpreted by scholars as a shaman, ruler, or elite priest. The elongated shape of the head reflects the highly prized Olmec practice of artificial cranial deformation. The adult holds a rigid, stylized infant across their lap or chest. The infant shows the iconic facial characteristics of an Olmec "were-jaguar"—a mythological, supernatural entity that is half-human and half-feline. Olmec iconography heavily highlights features like a prominent, flared upper lip turned down at the corners, a flat nose, and a diagnostic V-shaped cleft at the top of the skull. This indicates a spiritual fusion with the jaguar, the apex predator of the Mesoamerican rainforest, which symbolized power, dominance, and connection to both the living world and the underworld. The "presentation" of a limp or static supernatural baby is one of the most famous motifs in Olmec religious art. Scholars believe these figures were sacred, empowered objects used to validate a ruler's shamanic authority, or served as symbolic offerings linked to agricultural fertility, rain, and maize.

A particularly beautiful example of this type of Olmec carving in jade! This is an Olmec "were-jaguar" figure, characterized by its cleft head and snarling mouth, often carved from greenstone or jade. The figure is likely from the Middle Formative period, roughly 900–400 BCE. Such sculptures are prominent examples of pre-Columbian art from the Gulf Coast region of Mexico. The Olmec "were-jaguar" is a composite mythological being combining human and jaguar features, derived from Old English were (man) and jaguar. It represents a central supernatural deity or spirit symbolizing divine political power, rain, and the fierce life-giving forces of the Mesoamerican jungle. Many scholars believe the were-jaguar embodies an early rain and agricultural god, with the cleft head symbolizing a crack in the earth or a cloud bearing water. Early archaeological theories suggested it represented the offspring of a mythical mating between a human and a jaguar. Olmec elite rulers used the were-jaguar motif to link their lineage to divine, apex predator energy, justifying their political dominance. It may symbolize shamans or rulers transforming their spiritual state into a powerful feline essence during rituals.

Like their contemporaries, the Olmec made figurines but of greenstone rather than clay. This one, whose identity and use are mysterious, holds objects that may address nature's fertility: on the right, perhaps a cut conch shell that refers to water, and on the left, what may be a plant or a bundle of green feathers that symbolizes new vegetation.

A tour de force of Olmec lapidary work, this pendant is sculpted out of a single piece of serpentine with metallic inclusions. It depicts a male reclining on his left side, with his left arm placed against his sharply upturned head. The position of both arms and legs and the presence of hollowed spaces in between them suggest that it was meant to be worn horizontally, suspended from some sort of string or cord. Attention to detail is apparent. Fine incised lines delineate the fingers, toes, and buttocks, and even finer lines are used to indicate details of the ears and the loincloth worn by the personage. Deeper carving is seen in the rendering of the mouth, nostrils, and eyes. The sharply down-turned mouth, characteristic of Middle Formative Olmec art, may be related to a jaguar maw and suggest a supernatural state of being. The perforations in the earlobes would have allowed for the suspension of ornaments. Other reclining figures are known from the Olmec culture, but it is difficult to state with precision what such a posture might imply. Some scholars have suggested that these figures are flying or floating, and they represent the trance shamans experience after consuming hallucinogens. The jaguar maw may indicate the figure was in the throes of a supernatural trance.

This is one of the most amazing pieces of Olmec culture. It was carved in jadeite and was made between 900-300 BC. There is debate whether it is a woman who finds praying or singing, or possibly a man with an expression of authority. Notice the long straight hair, as well as his face with a very distorted mouth, a trait present in Olmec art and that some have linked with the cult of the jaguar. The Olmec "cult of the jaguar" refers to the intense veneration of the jaguar as a primary supernatural deity in the early Mesoamerican civilization (c. 1200–400 BCE), symbolizing power, rain, and fertility. It is characterized by widespread art featuring "were-jaguars"—human-feline hybrids with cleft heads and snarling mouths—which likely represented a divine, ruling lineage or transformation between earthly and spiritual realms. It is unknown where this object was found. Part of the Dumbartok Oaks collection in the USA.
