A classic Mesoamerican Totonac ceramic seated figure, widely identified as a Seated Priestess or Goddess from the Classic Veracruz culture of Mexico (dating approximately to 600–900 CE). The sculpture features a female figure sitting cross-legged, adorned with a detailed textured headdress or turban, ear spools, bracelets, and a prominent ceremonial object or apron resting across her lap. Crafted from terracotta clay with characteristic dark bitumen (chapopote) accents, a signature design element commonly used by Gulf Coast artisans to outline facial features and garments. Figures of this type typically represent elite members of society, high-status ritual specialists (shamans), or deities associated with fertility and the underworld.

Produced by shaft tomb-builders in ancient West Mexico (Jalisco region) during the Protoclassic period. The figure features characteristic ear spools, facial painting or tattooing, elaborate headgear, and textured shoulder and arm ornamentation representing ritual scarification or adornment. These ceramic sculptures were placed as grave goods within shaft tombs to accompany and protect the deceased in the afterlife.

Jaina Burial Figure of a Mayan Lord

Jaina Island, Mexico

Jaina is a small, artificial limestone island off the coast of Campeche, Mexico, that served as an elite Maya necropolis from 300 to 1200 CE. It is globally renowned for thousands of highly detailed, hand-sculpted ceramic figurines placed in burials to escort the dead into the underworld. This regal portrait of a statesman conveys the austerity of a mature person of rank. It is one of the most elegant depictions of the Jaina figural style. The lord wears a deer's head as headdress secured with a thick headband, large earrings, and wide cuff. His tufted cape is adorned with the pods, perhaps of the ceiba tree, believed to be the cosmic axis mundi. Capes with large tufted feathers, similarly worn draped over the shoulders and open in the tront, are considered specific clothing marking the nobleman as a participant in a blessing ceremony. These capes are shown on two Jaina figures (Dumbarton Oaks Collection, Washington, D.C., no. PC.B.200; Museo Nacional de Antropologia, Mexico City, no. MNA-5- 1045). It is also shown on a painted ceramic vessel illustrating a blessing with the caped figure receiving sprinkles of liquid from a bundle of feathers held by a lord wearing the pectoral with an Ik emblem (see O'Neil in Pillsbury, ed., Ancient Maya Art at Dumbarton Oaks, 2012, pp. 412-414). The subject figure also wears the large circular ornament of shell or jade, which is incised with the Ik emblem, meaning wind; appropriately referencing the whistle component of this Jaina figure.

This haunting figure huddles with its leg hugged to its chest and its head dropped on its knee. It simultaneously suggests the knotted tension of anxiety and the sublime absorption of deep prayer. Created over 700 years ago, in the Inland Niger Delta region of present-day Mali, this elegant work's intense emotional immediacy blurs the boundaries of time and place. This terracotta sculpture comes from a site called Jenne-jeno, the oldest known city in sub-Saharan Africa. Jenne-jeno flourished in the ninth century A.D., but declined and was abandoned by 1400. Items of cast brass and forged iron, clay vessels, and figures like this one survive. They testify to what scholars contend was a richly varied and highly sophisticated urban society. A few controlled archaeological digs provide only the vaguest outlines of the original significance of the art of this time and region. Recovered terracotta figures are frequently quite detailed. They include jewelry, clothing, and body ornaments such as the parallel columns of bumps and circles on the back of this work. Sometimes they cover the entire body and seem to represent the pustules of some dreadful illness. The Middle Niger culture represents one of West Africa's oldest and most unique urban civilizations, flourishing in the Inland Niger Delta of Mali from roughly 250 BCE to the 13th century CE. Centered around sites like Djenné-Djenno, the society was defined by decentralized, peaceful urbanism and specialized trade. Unlike many ancient civilizations, the Middle Niger cities (composed of clusters of disjointed mounds) were not governed by a coercive state, kings, or powerful elites. Power was shared among corporate and kin groups in a decentralized ("heterarchical") structure.

Bottle with seated figure Nasca artist(s) 1–300 CE On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 362 Unlike their northern counterparts, who used two-piece ceramic molds for manufacturing vessels, Nazca potters shaped containers by coiling and modeling. Figure vessels like the present example are rare and have an early date in the Nazca ceramic sequence, which lasted for at least 700 years. This engaging polychrome bottle takes the shape of a seated, compact human figure. It has a single spout and strap handle. The large head sits atop the broad shoulders, and the figure's legs are pulled close to the body, with arms and hands held tightly to the chest. Details such as fingers, toes, nails, and facial features are geometricized. The eyes and mouth are slightly raised, while prominent are the nose and a protuberance on the forehead. This mysterious knob may be a reference to fishermen, who are often shown with such a feature. The figure wears a head cover and a striped hipcloth. On his left upper arm is a stylized long-beaked bird, probably a sea bird, and on his right an anthropomorphized fish, perhaps a killer whale or shark. Marine imagery features prominently in all Nazca art, reflecting the economic importance of ocean resources. A source of constant wealth as well as danger, the sea played a major role in myths of all coastal peoples in the Andes.

Beginning in 1900, young painters and sculptors of all nationalities migrated to the Paris neighborhood of Montparnasse, the city’s hub of avant-garde activity. Despite their different approaches and interests, the artists of the so-called School of Paris fostered an inspiring climate of imaginative cross-fertilization that helped to sustain the idea of Paris as the center of artistic activity until the beginning of World War II. Jacques Lipchitz moved to Paris in 1909, and through his friendships with Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso, and others, he participated in the Cubist movement. His bas-reliefs and sculptures in the round communicate the geometric and fractured forms and the favored subject matter (musicians and seated bathers, for example) of contemporary Cubist paintings.

A large vintage 1950s 60s handmade sterling silver and multi-colored enamel Mexican modernist stylized figure brooch from Taxco. No doubt a Chato Castillo design for Los Castillo, this example is unsigned, and thus may have been made by one of their workers in his spare time to sell for extra money. This was an established practice in Taxco in all the larger talleres, and gave the workers an additional way to earn money, though they weren't allowed to use the studio marks for their extracurricular work. This fine example measures 2-5/8" tall by 1" wide and weighs 15 grams total. As noted above, this example is unsigned but no doubt a Los Castillo design, and has been tested and guaranteed to be as described. Excellent vintage condition.

A striking bronze sculpture depicting a fragmented human form sitting on a bench creates a contemplative atmosphere in an urban park. The missing torso and elongated head structure evoke introspection and artistic depth.
