Flying ondol

When I was little, I was visiting my grandma in the old family house and she nonchalantly pointed out the bricked up ondol where she said all the young girls would hide out when the Japanese soldiers came though.

Jowanurn - Water
Jowanhearth - Water/Fire

Inspirations: water pot, teapot, ondol heating system (a heating system invented by the Koreans to heat the floor of an entire house), Jowangshin, the Korean goddess of the hearth

Ondol is a traditional Korean floor-heating system that uses heat from flue gases. A fire lit outside or at the side of the house sends hot smoke through underground channels, warming the stone floors before exiting through a chimney. [🎞️tech-evolution]

In Joseon Dynasty etiquette, offering the warmest spot on the ondol to a guest or elder was the highest form of hospitality. However, foreign travelers unaccustomed to floor heating often recorded in their journals that the guest rooms were "scorching hot and borderline unbearable to sleep on."

You can tell by how hard Literally Everybody in a hot part of the world worked on this during the intervening 2,500 years. Windcatchers, takhabushes, tsubo-niwa...

Korea's ondol design was SO inspiring, Frank Lloyd Wright copied it to invent Western plumbed-in underfloor heating and cooling.
we really don't talk anough about what a miracle AC is. You can change the temperature of the air by willing it! This was considered irrevocable proof of godhood for 2500 years

Me (grumbling to myself): "I really don't like the title of the chapter I just published on Korean nostalgia for their heated floors (ondol)"

My wife (ignoring me, staring at the fireplace): "Ya know, David, home is where is the hearth is..."

I got an ondol floor mat! It has 3 heat settings. 🥹

We're a proper Korean household now because everyone is sitting on the floor and the couch is just for aesthetic. 😎

I had to look up Ondol. There was a Korean woman in town who had a mansion, and the mansion had heated marble floors. I never knew until now that heated floors were a Korean thing. I thought it was a wealth thing.

…wife gives me Hell if I have the AC one degree higher…
…I ask her if she's ever been in Korea in the wintertime (alluding to her going there next month to spend a few months)…
…'Yeah, but we have ondol (heated floors) there…
…heh…hoping they have an extra-chilly winter this year…

RED FLOWERS (Drawn and Quarterly, 2021): probably the best Tsuge collection (of the four released, at least)? It’s got the established voice to it, without the later volumes’ sense that there is nothing in the world apart from the cartoonist himself… standouts: “The Salamander,” “The Ondol Shack.”

Ondol is a traditional Korean floor heating system where heat warms the floor directly, making homes cozy and warm in winter. Many homes in K-dramas have ondol! #KoreanWinter #KoreanLife #KoreanCulture #Kpop #Kdrama #Korea #WarmHome #KoreanTravel #Seoul #KoreaTour #KCulture
