Open does not imply less credibility. Transparency means open to scrutiny and improvement. As Samuel Dotson said: "The argument that open-source tools are less credible is really an argument about familiarity, not capability." Panel discussion from Openmod Canada: youtu.be/Qf6DNNtSB_A

What are the key smallish (say, 30 to 120 people) topical meetings coming up in the next year or so (say, through summer 2027) on:

-- climate science
-- climate impacts
-- climate economics

Big meetings are great for seeing a diverse set of people, but small topical meetings are often best.

OpenMod South Africa 2026
The Inaugural OpenMod Workshop on the African Continent Friday, 26 June 2026 | University of Cape Town, South Africa 🎫 Free to attend | 🎥 Sessions will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube About the Event Open Energy Transition and the Energy Systems Research Group from the University of Cape Town are proud to announce OpenMod South Africa 2026, the first OpenMod Workshop ever held on the African continent. Open-source energy system modelling has been evolving for years. It is already embedded in regulatory processes, power system planning, flexibility assessments, and investment analyses across Europe and beyond. The tools have matured. The community has grown. And now the conversation is coming to Africa. OpenMod South Africa will bring together researchers, system planners, utilities, regulators, developers, and students working at the intersection of energy, data, and climate to showcase what open modelling can do, share what it has already done, and build the foundations for a stronger African open modelling community. If open-source modelling is new to you, you are warmly welcome. This workshop is designed for all levels of experience. What to Expect ⚡ Lightning talks — concise presentations on tools, methods, and real-world applications 🖥 Technical demonstrations — live walkthroughs of open-source frameworks and case studies 💬 Breakout sessions — facilitated discussions on regional planning challenges and data gaps 🤝 Networking — structured and informal engagement across the full energy modelling community Call for Contributions We welcome contributions from practitioners, researchers, developers, and policymakers. If you would like to present a lightning talk, lead a technical demonstration, or facilitate a breakout session, you can indicate your interest in this form. Suggest your in person contribution May 29th, 2026 at the staging area 1 of the openmod forum describing your stall/lightning talk/breakout session. Submission deadline: 29th May 2026 Attendance All presenters and contributors are expected to attend in person. For general participants, in-person attendance is strongly encouraged as the workshop is designed to enable the kind of deep technical exchange and collaboration that only happens in the room. The Variable Openmod headphones were my last designs before I left the headphone hobby. They were designs made to allow for a vast amount of customization and to allow anyone to build the headphone they want with whatever parts they wanted. A base to start off from. Something to improve upon.
April 12, 2025 at 9:13 AM
Variable Openmod Part 3. A headset that uses modified Part 1 parts. It was designed to use as few different parts as possible so to be easy to assemble and use. It was also to show how modifiable the original Openmod design was by just doing some slight modifications to the original Part 1 model.
April 12, 2025 at 9:00 AM
Variable Openmod Part 2. Designed to be fully compatible with Part 1. It also needed to be able to use the MDR-XB1000 earpads. Due to it being a round shape, I increased the driver compatibility to allow for larger drivers. The headband also needed to be different but also easy to use and print.
April 12, 2025 at 8:58 AM
Variable Openmod Part 1. A fully open source headphone. Designed to be simple to assemble, highly modular and customizable while using widely accessible parts. Made to be comfortable while also looking good and easy to 3D print. It was designed based on lessons learned from my previous headphones.
April 12, 2025 at 8:52 AM
The Speaker Box. Uses all the parts of the Openmod headphone excluding the earpads and all the 3D Printed parts of the headphone itself. Designed to go along with the release of the Openmod series. It was made to be compact and sturdy for shipping while being a neat little project by itself.
