By sheer coincidence I am going back seven years today when I turned 60 and went to see the Oppidum d'Entremont so this is my #RomanSiteSaturday.

So I spent my birthday in a field with absolutely nobody else around. As one does.

Importantly, the discovery was made near the Iron Age royal site (or oppidum) at Stanwick, which was likely to have been the major power centre of the Brigantes and home of the historically attested Queen Cartimandua 7/10

Camulodunum, the Roman Colchester in Essex, was an important castrum and city in Roman Britain. It was the first capital of the province. Originally it was the site of the Brythonic-Celtic oppidum of Camulodunon, capital of the Trinovantes and later the Catuvellauni tribes. #RomanSiteSaturday

One of our favourite day trips is to the nearby oppidum (fortified town) at Ensérune, between Narbonne and Béziers. Created around 575 BC, it covered 30 hectares in the 2nd century BC. It acted as an economic and cultural interface between the Celts, Greeks, Iberians, Etruscans and later Romans.

This rare bronze purse was found with six #gold coins still inside in the #Celtic oppidum (settlement) at Manching. It was originally sealed with an organic material, presumably a leather strap.
The purse is rather small: 4.3x3.3 cm. The diameter of the smallest coin is 6.5 mm.🧵1/2

En fait, César mentionne les Parisii, il dit qu'ils ont un oppidum, une place fortifiée habitée servant de chef lieu quoi, mais on ne l'a jamais trouvé : à Bobigny ? Nanterre ? Butte aux Cailles ? Et jusqu'à présent, des traces d'époque gauloise à Paris c'était "rarissime"

The oppidum (or possibly huge hillfort) of Stanwick was a major #IronAge centre of the Brigantes.

One of Britain's largest metalwork deposits was found nearby, indicating wealth comparable to mainland European societies.
