It’s #WorldWildlifeDay and we're celebrating the many benefits of veteran fruit trees for wildlife. Our students (pictured) recently learnt some valuable skills in veteran tree care at Bethlem Royal Hospital's amazing old orchard in London. #CommunityOrchards

The Cherokee did a lot of work to adapt peaches to the southeast's weather. IIRC some of those cultivars were the parents of modern southeastern peaches, so they're still the foundation of orcharding in the Southeast.

Wouldn't be surprised if that were true for apples as well.

Nowadays we'd have industrial farming (orcharding?) and a penis monoculture susceptible to some weird rot or penis weevil or something

Just finished reading @ronnisalt.bsky.social 's debut novel Gunnawah and loved it. I grew up along the Murray River in cropping and orcharding communities and and dad worked for the Victorian SR&WSC (irrigation etc)...so not only was it a great story that kept me guessing, it prompted great memories

The smallest scrap of land can produce enormous amounts of food. Success lies in design & maintenance. With permaculture, primary labor is all at the onset; maintenance is minimal. No need to replant every year—just once. Here’s one guide for sub- & urban areas. travis-tx.tamu.edu/2021/03/24/m...

New here. Senescence, a fitting start perhaps. The end of one season...the start of another.

I've been orcharding for 11 years now and still love it.

Was working and ended up managing a commercial farm and now manage an orchard for a 2 Michelin star restaurant in Oxfordshire.

First posts on a new platform always feel a little daunting ...but good to see there's a few friendly faces here already from the UK orcharding scene 😅

So to start us off in good stead, here's a fine example of a quince from Mitcham Community Orchard taken this summer to share with you 🌞

Made the mistake of spending time in Solarpunk/Agroforestry reddit. So much of it is people who know NOTHING about plants, orcharding, food production/storage/distribution. Ppl genuinely believe plant three trees, get food year round

Turns out they get pissed when you add nuance to the conversation

Hahahaha! Yeah... in my tiny orcharding experience (I'm on year 2.5 now) almost everything at the grocery store exists at the end of all sorts of extreme levels of control that does *not* fit most folks' farming fantasies.

Due to historical orcharding, apricots (and apples) are a feature of many people's yards in my area of NM.
We're coming up on the season when roughly half the conversations overheard in town are about the apricots not producing cause they bloomed before the frosts finished.

...where she attended one of the popular half-time boarding school arrangements, graduating at age 20, like many folks do in her area.
She grew up in an orcharding village and gained her tree knowledge that way.
She was an excellent student who HATED getting bad marks!

Diane Flynt is key not just to the renaissance in cider throughout the South, but also at the very heart of orcharding for apples, specifically cider apples.

It is always a joy to speak with her about not just cider apples, but growing apples for cider - an important distinction.

Did some minor googling on orcharding, occupational tattoos, and space elevators.

Learned a little about mulching and irrigation systems, how a sailor earns a compass tat, and that you'd ride in a "crawler" on a space elevator.
What sort of niche research have you had to do for your latest book/WIP? What did you learn? #WritingPrompt
