#Overwinter
My husband can’t bear for me to throw away the flowers from my containers at the end of summer, so he puts them in the greenhouse & didn’t these verbena overwinter beautifully. #gardening

This is a chiffchaff. While small numbers overwinter here in the UK, hearing their song ‘chiff chaff chiff chaff’ for me really signals the start of Spring, I know I’ll be hearing one any day 🥰

An American Robin passing by overhead against blue skies. These birds will overwinter if there is food — such as berries — around.

Sandhill Cranes strolling through the snow. Some Cranes will overwinter here; I saw a flock of about 40 the other day.

Potatoes & garlic from last year's harvest are still keeping well in the cool, dark, garage. Today we're also harvesting some of our overwinter goodies from plants doing work in the backyard, including celery, carrots, & a new surprise overwinter friend, broccoli! w/ @efilnikufsin.bsky.social 🌱

A male Eastern Bluebird perches for a moment before heading back out into the cattails to look for food. Some of these birds will overwinter; I bet they are happy about the warmer temps we are having.

Autumn is a time when you want to pause, listen to the silence, appreciate the beauty of a fleeting moment, and photograph birds. Solitary bramblings sometimes overwinter in southern Siberia. All photos are my own.

Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) This Butterfly species undertakes an amazing September migration from Canada & US to overwinter in Mexico. A return trip begins in March, no individual completes the entire round trip involving 4 generations in the annual cycle. Photo by Tom Koerner in the USA 🦋🦋

And if we can get some ACTUAL rain, some of these clumps will suddenly be Very Big Clumps.

Then it’ll be time for “welp, it didn’t overwinter. Next!” which is kinda fun.

My overwinter project is to dig up all the fruit bushes and replanted them in a new bed.

Plant a ton of plants that flower. Moths and butterflies and beetles are also pollinators. Wasps are pollinators (although, wasps). Don't do spring clean up until March to give bugs a place to overwinter.

One of the lovely warblers visiting my backyard, a Yellow-rumped Warbler. A few of these birds overwinter here in Michigan by surviving on berries, but many more pass through in the Spring.

This might be the youngest Sandhill Crane at the park right now. The other colts are about two to three times the size of this one. This young one still has plenty of time before migration (and some of the local cranes won't migrate and will overwinter.)

A male Belted Kingfisher flying over a local river that has not frozen over. Most of these birds around here in Michigan migrate, but if there is open water with food available, they can overwinter.

Always grateful for a thirsty bumble bee gyne sighting this late in the year. May she overwinter successfully! #bees #yvrbees

I saw my first Fall flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers this weekend. They signal the end of Fall warbler migration as they are some of the last warblers to head south. A few of them overwinter here in Michigan, surviving through the cold months by eating berries.

It’s getting a bit packed on the local pond as more swans arrive to overwinter. More photo opportunities for me, though 😍🦢

I learned something new the other day, thanks to the Washtenaw Bird and Nature Alliance's president, Juliet Berger. This Belted Kingfisher has juvenile plumage, but this photo was taken recently. Juliet Berger mentioned that birds overwinter don’t molt their body feathers until June/July.

It was a weekend for butterflies! A few species overwinter as adults here: commas, tortoiseshells and this beauty - the mourning cloak. Happy to see so many over the last couple of days #invertebrates 🌿
