#PGCE
The AI checker being used by the University I did my PGCE at recently was giving so many false positives that they had to abandon it. They're also prone to false positives for neurodivergent writers. https://pub.cbrasch.me/ai-detectors-are-falsely-flagging-neurodivergent-writers-3e5ea2661abb
AI Detectors are Falsely Flagging Neurodivergent Writers
AI has become a widespread watchdog, yet its weaknesses are causing neurodivergent individuals to be wrongly flagged for their writing.

Trainees I work with are starting to think about their first PGCE assignment so in #MathsToday I’m re-reading Malcom Swan’s famous “Dealing with misconceptions in mathematics”. Interesting to re-read in light of all the oracy stuff going on

What is going on in education? Maybe oldies like me have left or do not teach anymore. My last PGCE student asked AI to explain how Spanish chooses verbs to talk about the weather. She changed my suggested lesson and trusted AI. Luckily, students did not understand anything and promptly forgot it.

Strange but true - he was vice-chancellor of University of Huddersfield when I got my PGCE. I could have graduated and have my scroll given to me by him. But I didn’t believe my mates and got pissed the night before. Bad move.

Having left school without qualifications, I had to get GCSE English and Maths at grade C to get onto my PGCE - despite having Eng Lit A level and being in the final yr of my degree. Aced the English but the Maths was a torment. Found a very good tutor; scraped my C after 8 wks of cramming, aged 32.

And when I did my PGCE (teaching qualification in England), he was the chancellor of the university. If he'd been at the graduation ceremony, I might have turned up.

Just to note that in ITE, it is now compulsory to spend 5 days focussing on behaviour management. All our PGCE trainees, in every subject, spent their 2nd week on placement learning about behaviour for learning, observing good practice etc. And it is generally a major focus throughout the year!

It's a truly lovely campus loved my time there did my PGCE there, do alot with the Ed there. Really inclusive (My first uni was before I think we really had any adjustments... less fun tbh. 🫪)

But my later years at EHU and Uclan been really good.

That’s what I keep thinking when I look at the primary expectations since 2014. Large parts of the Y5/6 curriculum were not taught to me until Y8/9. Yet I have a decent set of O Levels and A Levels, a degree and a PGCE. So what exactly is this rushing them through learning supposed to be achieving?
October 25, 2026 at 5:54 PM
Most of the grammar I’ve taught in primary I saw for the first time when teaching from Jolly Grammar. I managed to get through grammar school, get good O and A levels, do an OU degree & PGCE without knowing what any of it was called.

Not sure how subj-specific this is, but my PGCE MFL cohort was taught ‘graded Q&A’ as a method in the late 90s. Vg for vocab. Imagine 6 ish animal flashcards, representing eg chat, chien, souris etc. After a bit of listening & repeating, you could point to a card & say “c’est un chat, oui ou non?”

Tamsin, a fictional maths graduate from Uxbridge and South Ruislip, wants to teach Year 10. The London bursary was cut from £27,000 to £15,000. A UCL PGCE has 40 maths places sitting empty. Schools in Hillingdon are still advertising. Westminster made that choice.

Tamsin's Story
Tamsin, 24, from Uxbridge and South Ruislip wanted to become a secondary school teacher in London. Despite critical teacher shortages in her subject area, she found the training bursaries had been reduced by the Department for Education. The classrooms were there, qualified graduates like Tamsin were ready to train, but Westminster's spending rules forced departments to compete for fixed pots of money rather than funding what was needed. This episode explores how Treasury constraints on teacher training recruitment targets ignore regional disparities, leaving London schools understaffed not through lack of willing teachers, but through political choices about public investment. Recorded in London. This podcast contains discussion of education policy and public spending decisions.

I did a PGCE then got a job in a private school. I was told I was raping the system. Even now I expect some people will judge me for my choices (they were the right choices, and I stand by them), but that felt exceptionally cruel and unjustified.

Did my PGCE spring term placement there 😳
There's a secondary school in Peterborough called Jack Hunt and I never thought twice about it
Can't believe York have a player called Jack Hunt. Wonder what his nickname is. First rule of being a Hunt, no hard c sound at the end of first name.

Sidenote: for people who did their History PGCE with Dean Smart, enjoy!
#MedievalSky Here is a thread on Chepstow Castle and its geography that I’ve wanted to do for a while.
This is the usual view of the castle shared online and in promotional materials showing a gentle slope up to the impressive 12th-c gatehouse and 13th-c mural Tower. It all looks very accessible. 1/

Exactly Where I Want to Be: Reflections of a New History Teacher
This blog post was written by Mia Brown, a history teacher working at Churchdown School in Gloucestershire. She completed her PGCE at the University of Gloucestershire in 2026 and is now in her first ECT year. She reflects upon what it was like to learn on a PGCE course and how the start to her ECT year has gone. Her key takeaway is the research-informed practice that allowed her to critically evaluate how to deliver her lessons.

The best one I read when doing PGCE was that there are more accidents in playgrounds when parents are there because they keep saying 'be careful 'don't do that'.
A Dutch traffic engineer took the lights out of a junction carrying 22,000 cars a day. Crashes fell.

“When there’s a problem with a road, traffic engineers always try to add something.”

A devastating assessment of several other professions I could name.

Weeknote 2026/42: Just the right amount of friction
Why good design isn’t frictionless: Dutch traffic engineering, browser warnings, and a week at home in Amsterdam. Plus Japanese garage metal and a 50th.
