How do primordial germ cells (PGCs) migrate across a developing embryo?

#LMBResearch from Katharine Goodwin and Kate McDole (@cellbiol-mrclmb.bsky.social) uncovers the mechanisms PGCs use in mouse embryos to navigate this long and surprisingly risky journey.

To explain briefly, PGCs can be used to give rise to sperm or ova cells

In avian biology, PGCs can be genetically modified, then injected into embryonic chickens, and they mature in the host (usually a male) and produce mature gametes (usually sperm), but there still then needs to be a host hen
[sigh] here we go again

Once again, Colossal Biosciences is tech bro grift and journalists don’t need to reprint their press releases uncritically (and they only claim they’ve made Nicobar pigeon germ cells!)

They will not ever produce a live dodo

Scientists claim they’ve made ‘pivotal step’ in bringing back the dodo for first time in 300 years
Thousands of dodos could return within a decade according to Colossal Biosciences, a ‘de-extinction’ company – but experts warn of ‘moral hazard’

Incredibly excited to share my new preprint! 🪰🧬

Ever wondered how germ cells can specify their fate without having a dedicated transcriptional program?

We found that germ cells keep the uncommitted chromatin state of the early embryo

So excited to see the new work out from fellow PhD candidate @mayapahima.bsky.social in the @flomarlow.bsky.social lab where they show that PGCs are not restricted to GSC differentiation and contribute to other cell populations of the early gonad and ovary 🦓🐟❤️!

Cool work from the McDole lab just published. Primordial germ cells have to endure some pretty tight spaces on their journey!

Because this is the #UKSR, where Farage and other PGCS types are untouchable.

Rayner's finances were only investigated because a certain British Oligarch (another Untouchable) chose to pursue her.
I'll just point out that if you turned up with £885,000 in cash to buy a house HMRC would audit the hell out of you for criminality/unpaid tax.

Why does Nigel Farage's girlfriend get a free pass?

The peripheral distribution of centromeres in PGCs is apparent in 3D reconstruction of confocal images. The data suggest that centromeres are separated in PGCs.

Surprisingly, despite the de-clustering of centromeres, the signal in the individual CENPA foci seemed more pronounced in PGCs. 4/9

Per Kagan recently, Donald Trump losing the Iran War has effectively ended the AAs. Donald has made Iran the dominant regional influence.

PG countries will have to make peace with Iran. PGCs will have to reject or exit AAs for economic survival.

End of AAs damages Donald's legacy & grifting.
