Immigration courts are already handing down about 75,000 asylum decisions per year. So getting to “hundreds of thousands of trials” is not exactly a moonshot.

In 2023, 770k asylum decisions were made, of which 437k were denied, and 319k were granted. Greg Abbott chose to bus 40k people to Denver alone. This is blatant use of these people as political weapons.

Charting TRAC's latest data on immigration-court asylum decisions shockingly illustrates the Trump administration's full-on assault on the right to asylum in the US.

Denials (brown in the chart) have shot up from the low 50%s two years ago to the mid-90%s now.

The latest immigration court data released today by TRAC show that the total number of new deportation cases filed in December 2023 (265,000) is greater than the TOTAL number of new cases filed in ANY FULL FISCAL YEAR (12 mo) between 2001 – 2017.

Enormous numbers of new deportation cases were filed in US immigration courts this summer, raising the backlog to 2,620,591 pending cases (as of August). If the backlog were a city, it would now be roughly the third largest city, = the size of Chicago.

How big this number is, depends on what you compare it to. It seems like a rough guess is that in the near future it will reduce the number of people applying for asylum by about half? On the other hand, half the current level is still high by historical standards. trac.syr.edu/phptools/imm...

With new EOIR data updated through November, TRAC updated the Immigration Court Quick Facts.

U.S. Immigration Courts Completed Nearly 1 million Cases in FY 2024.

About 325,000 resulted in court-ordered removal or voluntary departure.

New TRAC data + report:
Before releasing an individual from detention, ICE can issue an I-247 detainer form to local law enforcement, requesting that they take custody.
