This gorgeous piece of Swiss handywork is my #Swatch "The Beep", a numeric #POCSAG #pager sold in Europe in 1993. Look closely at the face and you'll see the antenna wires running across. This was also right at the dawn of GSM phone popularity in Europe, so The Beep was relatively short lived.

Welcome to the future! I love these old Skypers and they have a new life in DAPNET! POCSAG is a great protocol for messages in one direction.

Pagers aren't secure either.
Pagers generally run on the (completely unencrypted) POCSAG radio on a variety of frequencies, where they are still in operation (this isn't nowhere! there are legacy pager deployments!)
They are completely busted. It's about $15 to capture all pager messages.

mostly because pocsag and flex are ancient protocols from the days when small processors like those found in pagers couldn’t handle cryptography (and that cryptography was illegal to export under ITAR), and no one has yet deployed an alternative that works throughout an entire hospital

Currently having a wee look at pocsag traffic, seems the hospitals and CID folks down Manchester way have finally moved away from using pagers to transmit sensitive information.
Now the traffic seems to be about poorly horses with colic or dogs that aren't eating.
Frankly this is much better.

Having now confirmed that the hotspot is working ok on my budget friendly internet connection I have disconnected it from Hubnet for today, it will still periodically transmit POCSAG paging data for DAPNET though not all of it goes to my pager #hamradio
