Fun fact! When an archivist dies, their soul is entombed in the archive's infinity circuit to ensure that their knowledge of parish registers and medieval palaeography lives on forever.

It is a bit of an in-joke that a writer & an archivist who studied palaeography in the traditional manner should choose to wear a Croata heritage tie featuring the 9th century rounded Glagolitic script letter Ž or Živěte (Ⰶ) meaning to live, symbolising vitality, life & creation

love, come, some とかが u じゃなくて o で綴られるのは、「読みにくいでしょ」と気を利かせて u を o って書いたらそれが広まったかららしい。

はあ。気を利かせてくれてありがとうね。最悪だね。

And that's how I spent my junior year abroad in Ralph Hanna's palaeography classes.

Please note the original career plan was immigration law, not palaeography.

I email the Study Abroad coordinator and ask her if it would be possible to study palaeography. She says hmmmm, not too sure because these classes are for graduate students. But she would check. So she just emails the professor of palaeography at the time and he says sure!

I then really got into the development of Caroline minuscule because Vat. lat. 7207 is a pretty early specimen of said script. So then I'm learning all about palaeography, codicology, manuscript transmission, etc. I am now officially hooked.

And that is how I ended up doing a PhD in Palaeography. It is mostly thanks to this one ten-page paper I wrote in my second year of undergrad, all on the Libri Carolini/Vat. lat. 7207. And yes, whenever I have been back to the Vatican, I do try to call it up.

And that is how a roomful of members got to hear about juicy 15th century parish gossip in the Hartlebury Church Court book (plus dodgy live palaeography), and Worcestershire’s WW2 Archaeology (thanks to Naomi Taylor), all in one night.

There won't be an insular miniscule version for palaeography nerds, will there? 🐇

#FamilyHistory can be difficult if your ancestors moved around for work, such as Thomas Fletcher, a Ballad Singer or Travelling Book something... We can't make out that final word - can anyone work out what comes after 'Book'?

They used to use the letter Captchas to decipher palaeography by crowdsourcing... how far we have fallen...

aha! thanks! My palaeography training/experience comes in at least somewhat handy on occasion

I had fun getting a previously-untranslated martyrdom out into the world + to say a few words (and show an image!) about the weirdness of apocrypha scholars having to learn Byzantine Greek palaeography from scratch

Learning Latin palaeography. Featuring my doodle of a weird despairing creature.

Yes, I mean to say that my palaeography class began with the Carolingians and ended around 1500. I taught myself the handwriting from the 1600s on my own
