Rob McConnell Interviews - BRUCE CAMPBELL ADAMSON - L H Oswald was the Lone Assassin of JFK
Who really assassinated President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963? Was Lee Harvey Oswald acting alone, or was he part of a conspiracy involving powerful individuals operating behind the scenes?Join Rob McConnell on The 'X' Zone Radio/TV Show as he welcomes Bruce Campbell Adamson, genealogist, historian, author and independent researcher, for a compelling examination of one of the most controversial events in American history: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. For more than six decades, the events that unfolded in Dallas, Texas, have generated intense debate, numerous investigations, countless books and an extraordinary collection of competing theories. The official investigation conducted by the Warren Commission concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald fired the shots that killed President Kennedy and acted alone.Yet questions surrounding Oswald's associations, his movements before the assassination, the activities of intelligence agencies and the subsequent murder of Oswald by nightclub owner Jack Ruby have continued to fuel public interest. For Bruce Campbell Adamson, the search for answers began in earnest in 1991 and 1992.Initially, Adamson believed that the Warren Commission's central conclusion was correct: Lee Harvey Oswald had acted as the lone assassin. But as his investigation progressed, he discovered an individual whose connections would dramatically change his interpretation of the assassination. That man was George de Mohrenschildt.A Russian-born geologist, businessman and member of Dallas society, de Mohrenschildt was among Oswald's most intriguing acquaintances during the period preceding the assassination. His personal relationships, international travels and contacts with prominent individuals made him a particularly interesting subject for researchers attempting to reconstruct Oswald's life.Adamson became convinced that understanding de Mohrenschildt's background and associations was essential to understanding the circumstances surrounding Kennedy's death. What began as a historical investigation developed into years of painstaking research involving genealogical records, personal correspondence, government documents, photographs, addresses and telephone records.Adamson travelled extensively throughout the United States, examining archival collections and attempting to establish connections among individuals whose names appeared in the historical record. One particularly important source was de Mohrenschildt's personal address and telephone book, which Adamson studied in considerable detail. He used these records to develop an extensive chronology of relationships and events involving Oswald, de Mohrenschildt and numerous prominent figures. The results became the foundation of Adamson's multivolume research project, Oswald's Closest Friend: The George de Mohrenschildt Story, along with The JFK Assassination Timeline Chart.Through these publications, Adamson explores possible connections involving wealthy Texas businessmen, political figures, intelligence personnel and individuals associated with the events surrounding the assassination.Among the names examined in his research are H. L. Hunt, Lyndon B. Johnson, Allen Dulles and Jack Ruby.Adamson has also explored theories concerning the possibility that influential individuals participated in a conspiracy or attempted to manipulate the investigation. However, documented personal or professional associations do not, by themselves, establish involvement in an assassination. His proposed connections and interpretations must be distinguished from independently demonstrated evidence of criminal participation. The conversation explores the transformation in Adamson's thinking. What could cause a researcher who originally accepted the lone-assassin explanation to question his own conclusions? For Adamson, the answer lies in the relationships he uncovered while investigating de Mohrenschildt. His work raises questions about how investigators evaluate circumstantial evidence, whether previously overlooked records can alter historical interpretations and how easily associations between individuals can be mistaken for proof of coordinated wrongdoing. The interview also examines the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Oswald himself.A former United States Marine who defected to the Soviet Union before returning to America, Oswald lived a complicated life that continues to attract historical scrutiny. His activities in New Orleans, his political interests, his relationships in Dallas and his employment at the Texas School Book Depository remain important subjects in the study of Kennedy's assassination. Then there is Jack Ruby, the Dallas nightclub owner who fatally shot Oswald on November 24, 1963, while television cameras recorded the event.Ruby's actions prevented Oswald from standing trial, leaving generations of historians and investigators to debate unanswered questions about his motives and possible associations. The Warren Commission concluded that Oswald acted alone. The later House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded that Kennedy was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy, although aspects of the acoustic evidence underlying that conclusion were subsequently challenged.Despite decades of investigation, no alternative account identifying a proven conspiracy has achieved broad evidentiary acceptance.
